I meet odd people

So, this Sunday I decided to wash and clean the car. This is what you do on a Sunday.

So I go to a French car wash just outside St. Louis, and near a very good garden centre. I do wish that was open on a Sunday...

Anyway, as I take the car to the vacuuming section, this lass parks up next to us and starts to use the air pump for her tyres. All normal so far, and I'm already thinking about the dinner I'll be having later when I hear :

"Pardon, Pardon!"

Turns out the screw tops on her tyre valves are really tight, and difficult to take off. So I take the tricky one off, smile, and hand it back to her.

Now, I'm not saying she pointed at the other tyres, but she did make it clear that the others were to be removed, and I was the very man for the job.

OK, no problem, we're still surfing the gentle waves of a Sunday. So I took them all off and handed them back to her (only the original one was tight as it happens). Thought nothing of it as I returned to the job at hand, tidying up my car in the very embodiment of a late weekend activity.

Do you know how sometimes how you're too confused to be upset, or not upset or just.... but basically only afterwards realise that something odd has occurred?

So she walks over to me with the valve caps, says merci and puts them into my hand.

I had no words in any language to deal with that. But I did replace the caps, catching the eye of my wife, glimmering with gentle amusement as I did so.

Now, I'm not upset, at all. But that is odd behaviour isn't it? I mean, wherever you're from?

I *really* like the French by the way. Virtually institutionalised piss taking should be applauded.

Wow, I am absolutely amazed at this difference in culture!

You'd never get something quite so traditionally role-defining, sexually flirtatious or bound to make your OH admire your manly skills in our neck of the woods on a lazy Sunday - external car washing is banned here on Sundays and public holidays.

Re: I meet odd people

I've read your missive a few times now Zuri.

You're going to have to help me. What on earth do you mean? Is this sarcasm? A joke? Are you annoyed?

I washed my car, where it's allowed, during which I had what I think is an odd experience to share.

No, it's great - in case you didn't note it you had a much more entertaining post in-between from another EF member, which was then deleted.

I'm afraid that I'm a Virgo from star sign, and so tend to get drawn into these things while staying by what is fact based on my experience in Switzerland .

Re: I meet odd people

well, I deleted my post after thinking maybe it was innappropriate.

I still imagine the whole event must have had some sexual undertones.

As in, the damsel in distress was hoping for a full service, or something lke that..

Thanks, there are drive-ins like that in Altstetten, Zürich which are looking to get off the ground (for the OP, this was bantering)

She had some nerve, OP. Dont worry, I could bet she did not fancy you for a second, you were safe.

I'm not saying that there's any connection, but for anyone not in the know of what this could, or could not be about (I really apologise if I'm wrong, but at least now you are also in on the loop):

(Also work in Altstetten, but UBS).

Re: I meet odd people

Is it just me?

Knight with shining armor-all comes to the rescue of helpless lass in need at the carwash.

She's thinking about a quick buff (or at least trying to get him to), he's dreaming of dinner.

I mean, she couldn't screw the valve caps on by herself?

Next time, don't fret. Just give yourself a mental pat on the back and tell yourself 'yep, still got it.'

Reminds me of that joke on here recently about the furniture salesman...

You need to capitalise on the opportunity. Go again next weekend without your wife. If the girl is there again walk her over to your car and show her a huge hamper of unfolded laundry.

I was at the gas station earlier this afternoon. There was an older couple with the hood up obviously pondering something or other so I asked if I could help. The check engine lamp had come on and the car needed oil, but they didn't know which oil. Found the sticker, told her which oil, at which point he pointed to the dipstick and asked "And it goes in here?", so I did a brief explanation of checking and topping up oil, the difference between dino and synth, and what the oil weight nomenclature actually means (I'm a propellorhead, if you haven't already noticed).

As I was driving away they were putting the oil in. I felt a little bit guilty for not having done that for them too, but then I started to wonder, how on earth do you get to mid '50s owning a car (the car was hers and obviously high mileage) without at least once having topped up the oil? I thought they might be from another planet - I checked the mirror and saw the SH plates... almost the same thing.

This is the OP's way of letting us know that he drives a Ferrari. Subtle, but effective.

She´s French. She had to delegate some tasks.

Ok, Ok, I tend to agree with 22yards on this one.

Do you dress on Sundays like you work at a car cleaning place?

When I used to have to wear a suit for work and was out Christmas shopping I often used to get people asking me where stuff was etc. I'd send them to the right place of course.

There is the possibility that it was not, in fact, her car, nor his, but that they, like many people in Switzerland, simply primarily travel by public transport, and had borrowed this car from a friend. Some time ago, the Zurich trams had an ad promoting the idea that if one travels by tram for so long, one could safely simply forget which pedal was for the petrol, which for the clutch and brake, as one probably wouldn't be needing that info anyway.

Gotta love your "older couple" being in their "mid '50s".

It was clearly her car. She said the check engine light had come on in November and her mechanic had added a litre of oil - Even a leaky Jag won't lose that much oil just standing still.

As to "older", they weren't a young pair with their first car, they (as well as the engine) were past mid life, but they weren't ancient.

I don't expect people to be able to rebuild their own engines, nor even to be able to change a flat tire. Perhaps I just assume that people know more about the things that surround them because I myself am uncomfortable being reliant on something that I don't have at least a passing understanding of. The Swiss just aren't a DIY nation.

I haven't even put petrol in these past 20 years let alone know where oil goes or windscreen wash. It's just not my department.
