Good luck to all parents

Just wishing all the parents out there good luck at the start of this enormous black hole called the school holidays. The fun of trying to keep them occupied, not continually attached these days to some sort of screen, (in theory) waking them up sometime between daylight hours which can extend to 3pm if you have a mole child, paying exorbitant amounts for summer camps, etc

And to those without who are trying to go shopping without being deafened by little darlings who WANT that, can't go in a supermarket without being bribed & then when you finally do something to entertain them, won't leave without a rendition of the opera by a tone deaf punk.

Actually, they started two weeks ago here, and won't start until late next month in the German speaking bits!

And here, they end in another two months (August 29).

They start here (German speaking bit) tomorrow, until the 8th August.

I rather like the school summer holidays. No little ones of my own, and we live overlooking a primary school, so we will have peace and quiet for a few weeks.

Our kids had a Ferienpass last year. 25 CHF for the whole summer holiday which included free public transport and free activities most days from visits to the zoo to football training, cooking, chess, swimming, skateboarding, hiking, museums, crafts, visits to the police and fire etc plus free or reduced admission to many other activities.

I do know. Mine are at the slug teenager stage but I was watching a programme a few weeks ago about Empty Nest Syndrome & it's looming. Still, I remember that feeling at the beginning of the holidays & I was in the lucky position of not having to get up for work, find childcare etc. Trip to the park, throw sand in each others faces, picnic, camping etc. All good. But not everyone has the luxury of TIME & whatever age they are, it's still that time of year when it's all change on Waltons mountain.

Brilliant. Details please. Did you remember to collect them again before school re-started?

And they're off on holidays tomorrow and back on 15 August here (another German-speaking bit). As always, it depends on the canton...

I envy Ticino for that. I wish we had the same.

Re: Good luck to all parents

Some of the smaller communes around Geneva city don't break-up until tomorrow...

#1 son has the slightly dubious pleasure of trying to co-ordinate getting his eldest to her first Promotions parade in Vessy, collecting his second from the crèche down the hill in Carouge, and dealing with his wife who for some reason is convinced that she'll be giving birth to the third at some point during the day!!!

He's stoically insisting he can cope, so there's not much I can do but sit back and wait for the 'phone to ring.

At least it's not raining.

The older kids usually finish a week or two before the younger ones; that one came as quite a shock! But at least by then they're big enough to be bundled off to camp or mostly fend for themselves.

Send them to Longbyte, if you dare.

Better yet, send them to me.

They were for school children in Waedenswil/Au. I think it's too late to get them now for this year. Children at school here get given a letter about it in May or June.

I'm not sure whether other Gemeindes do the same. I know Wollerau does but again it's too late.

It's a fantastic idea though and it works thanks to local (and national) businesses and a few parents to act as chaperones for some of the visits.
