Where to find readymade Indian Paneer or even tofu?

Hi all,

Do any of the 'normal' chains (coop / migros / manor / denner / aldi / lidl etc) sell Tofu at a not-boutique-store-atrocious price? And... any chance of finding ready made Indian Paneer?

I know about the aggarwal shops in Bern / Zurich, but i'm hoping to find something nearer to home...Fribourg, maybe.

Thanks all.

Migros sells tofu, it's in the pre-wrapped cheese section. Don't have any in the 'fridge at the moment but I think it's around 3 francs for a block big enough to feed two.
I'd expect Coop and Manor to have it too.

Any asian shop in Fribourg would sell tofu, I assume.

This isn't very helpful to what you are asking directly but - Cottage cheese is almost the same as Indian Paneer. The Paneer is more dry and does not lose consistency or shape even in hot, well cooked dishes.

Almost all Coops sell paneer and tofu at least in Zurich. Next to other vegetarian/soy based items. Price, well Switzerland.

Coop la Maladière in Neuchâtel carries Paneer (near Tofu and other vegetarian dishes). I guess that other larger Coop in Switzerland carry Paneer as well.

Has Paneer any likeness to Halloumi?

Hi all,

And... any chance of finding ready made Indian Paneer?
To cook paneer dishes, we get cheese from the fresh cheese counters in Migros called Ziegenkase/Magerkase. It tastes similar to paneer and does not melt when fried or when cooked with gravy. The cheese is usually available in large Migros stores having the fresh cheese section like the one in MParc Dreispitz or in Migros Claramarkt (both in Basel). I have not seen it in smaller stores.

It costs about 1.2 CHF per 100 gms (cheap compared to other stores) and one can buy as much as one needs.

I do not have any at home right now, but will try to get it in the next few days and post a picture of the label.

You can buy paneer in any barkat store. I am not sure whether they are as common in fribourg as they are in Zurich

I was at one of the bigger Migros stores this week and took a picture of the cheese i described above. As you see in the image, the correct name of the cheese is Zigerkase.

Hey - you know it is actually really easy to make. Just requires milk and something acidic like lemon juice or a vinegar.
