Our neighbours use to hide behind the fence and listen to our conversations in Summer.. but stopped when they realized we knew and were taking the pee

Do you spy? Go on, tell me.. won't breathe a word

I only spy out the window to make sure the coast is clear and then make a mad dash for it..

Live on the top floor of a four story house. The apartments around us are 3 story.

So we can look into anyones apartment if we wanted.
Strangely enough we don't.

Re: It's official! Your neighbours really do spy on you

I posted this before, but...

On moving to Switzerland I was delighted to see that many of my neighbors were into astronomy.

Then I realized that the telescopes on the balconies were not pointed towards the stars.

---

Now in 2016 I'm just praying that the 'amateur astronomers' do not take up drone photography as their next hobby.

Re: It's official! Your neighbours really do spy on you

The article indicates that the spies are mostly in the 14-29 age bracket. Since none of my neighbors are in this age bracket I am safe. My analysis of their wireless traffic, emails, and the contents of their network storage devices confirms this.

My neighbours don't wave back and pretend to be checking their curtains whenever I catch them being nosey.

Re: It's official! Your neighbours really do spy on you

Here’s another one of my little tales of living in my home in Switzerland.

Before me, an old man lived here. The neighbours tell me that he needed company and care, so they used to just pop in from time to time, to bring him a Gipfeli or a meal, or pick up his laundry or return it washed, and give him a haircut.

Once, however, no-one happened to go by for several days, and when they did, he had locked the door. They had to call a locksmith, and they found him on the floor, having tripped, and needing medical attention. They were horrified, so they persuaded him not to lock his door, and thereafter made their visits more frequently. Since many of them were involved, he was able to live here for quite a long time before he had to go to an old-age/nursing home.

Some years later, I had left a sports bag lying in the passage. One of my neighbours, in the habit of checking up on the hold man, could vaguely make out this big, dark lump on the floor, inside my home. She immediately phoned another neighbour nearer me, and sent him over to check if I had perhaps fallen down. He and I then went outside to wave, to show her that I was fine.

Afterwards, she apologized profusely, saying that she didn’t stand at her window all day spying on me, but that she’d suddenly remembered the old man, and thought how terrible it would be if she ignored the dark lump and it then really did turn out that I had fallen, as he had once done.

Personally, I’d hate to have the feeling that someone is monitoring my activities –
except, of course, if it were merely JagWaugh browsing through my data traffic .
Yet the particular kind of non-spying caring that those neighbours showed? Yes, I prefer that any day, to indifference.

I agree doropfiz, but it seems to be a fading consideration more and more these days. Nice that your neighbours are so thoughtful. That's the true neighbourhood spirit that is so sadly lacking in many peoples' daily lives.

We have essentially windows instead of walls. I once caught my neighbor taking a peek over the terrace divider wall---but she soon learned her lesson! We have a no-pant policy in our flat :P Never happened again

We too read this The Local article. Thought to ourselves, if it is bad nowadays, yaw'll ought to have been here 40 years ago. Unbeliveable! An English girlfriend and I once had a woman nearly fall off her chair sideways as she strained ineligantly to listen what we were saying, and to follow our movements in the street. Spying comes in all forms.

Re: It's official! Your neighbours really do spy on you

A few years ago one of our elderly neighbours came over to our front door and exclaimed (we had a glass front door): Oooh! You've put a terrarium in your living room! That's why I can't see the back wall anymore! When you put in the curtains I already had trouble seeing all the way through, but now it's even worse!

She also used to comment on why we were leaving on foot instead of by car, and why, one day, we left half an hour later than usual.

Re: It's official! Your neighbours really do spy on you

One day I waved at my inquisitive neighbor and he pretended not to see me - must have been the undergarments; later on he took a stroll by my balcony for a closer look (he lives in another apt building), but only after he passed did I realized it was him, or I would have waved again.

After making sure we were decent folk, we were fully received into the fold of our Swiss neighborhood. So far, they've been super-cool and helpful. We, too.

Re: It's official! Your neighbours really do spy on you

My neighbours turned their telly around and watched the footy on their balcony. I did notice when they cheered. And clapped accordingly.

Myself, i was watching 10 year old CSI episodes.

I've never spyed on a neighbour, but i have been told or asked by a landlady about the comings and goings in her flat that i was renting. It turned out it was the flat across the hall that had that going on.

I always wondered who told her that it was my flat. Even landlords have their spies.

That article, i read it in Le Matin, is funny and a bit sinister too!!
