Tax declaration for a married couple...how do you know your individual portion?

Hi all,

I am living in Basel with my husband. For tax declaration we receive one common bill for both. This is somehow not clear, because we cannot know how much exactly the individual portion for me and for my husband is, respectively. Steuerverwaltung said, they don't indicate the individual amount in the bill for a married couple. As we have different salary, we would like to know basically how much for whom is.
Who could I ask regarding this? Any advice?

thank you in advance!

Your Husband.
A married couple's earnings are taxed as one single income.
It is up to you guys how you want to split the bill.

Re: Tax declaration for a married couple...how do you know your individual portion?

there is no individual portion as you are taxed together, as a couple.
if you want to get an estimation, you can use the withholding tax calculator on your salary but the numbers of the individual amounts will be different as you are taxed together.

Figure out what % of the total family income each contributes and split the tax bill the same way.

Re: Tax declaration for a married couple...how do you know your individual portion?

I guess if you keep completely separate finances, then splitting the tax bill is only one of a number of problems. I'd also keep it simple with a spreading rule based on total income for each party (from work and investments).

Umm, there is no individual portion.

You are each legally responsible for half.

So the husband can pay half and the wife nothing and they come after only the wife? or vice-versa.

Unless you have significant overseas affairs then use Baltax.

In our case, my wife pays the rent and I pay the taxes. Works out quite nicely in proportion to our salaries.

You earn e.g. 150'000, he earns 100'000. You pay 3/5 of the tax, he pays 2/5. Simple maths.

You are supposed to give all of your income to your husband. He will then deal with all financial matters. At the end of each month he will then give you an allowance in ratio to your performance that month.

Re: Tax declaration for a married couple...how do you know your individual portion?

I am curious on this as well as I am a US citizen and my husband is Swiss. We were married in June.
Before going to an expensive tax consultant I thought I'd check the threads first....
How do I submit what I have paid in Swiss taxes to the US government without divulging to the US government information about my husband's earnings?
Has anyone ever requested of the Swiss gov't a breakdown of tax payment between married couple for this reason?
I can imagine a simple allocation would make sense as well but only if IRS specifically allows this.

Re: Tax declaration for a married couple...how do you know your individual portion?

my wife and i et a shared tax bill, we split the bill pro rata in relation to our earnings, eg, if my wife earns 60k, and i earn 40 k,(yes my wife is the main earner)
we get a tax bill for 10 k, ..my wife pays 6k and i would pay 4k

There is no breakdown, so the Swiss can't provide it, if anything it's 50/50.

Just make up a number.

Tom

P.S. Actually, it's 100/100, if one doesn't pay, the other is responsible for 100%
