Paper shredding

I have a stack of confidential type documents i.e. bank statements etc.
Where can I go to shred my stack, other than my place of work?
The neighbors seem rather adverse to a bonfire on my balcony.

Re: Paper shredding

You could just buy a shredder, they're not that expensive. Basic models cost under 50 Fr

Re: Paper shredding

I got mine from Lidl at a sale (Aktion) for around 19.90 or so , tho' it can only shred paper. There are also some where you can shred Cd's and Dvd's too

Re: Paper shredding

I wouldn't go "somewhere" as you don't know what they will do with the trash or might even have an hidden scanner in their shredders.
If it's a one off thing you could soak them in water and macerate, then make a big ball, let it dry and throw it in the trash.

Re: Paper shredding

Our dechettarie doesn't want the shredded paper in the paper bin. Goes with the encombrants in a black bin bag, which means, I think, it goes to the incinerator to become electricity.

Re: Paper shredding

Check at your recycling center (Okifof). The one here in Zug has a large paper shredder that people can use.

Re: Paper shredding

Coincidentally, Aldi and Lidl both have paper shredders in their latest catalogues for 22 September.

They are similar: 10-sheet capacity, credit card and CD shredding, cross-cut (ie confetti-like, not long paper strips)

Re: Paper shredding

I have a domestic shredder, but for bulk disposal of A4 sized documents, I simply soak them in a bucket of warm water with some sugar. When they are soaked through, you can effortlessly tear about 20 or 30 at the same time. Drain the bucket and put the damp paper mass in a garbage sack. The sugar makes it just a bit sticky and lessens the risk that someone will sift through the paper pile.

But doesn't the sugar make it more likely that something small, furry with a long tail will sift through your garbage?

Compost is a good idea, but we have no need for the results and our dechettarie doesn't cope well with compost.

Even if neighbors are OK with the bonfire, I strongly suggest don't do it this way.
As I experienced once:

My neighbor had one of those bins with holes at the bottom and I borrowed it.
I was planning to just dump the lot and be done with it.

Trying to burn a big pile of stuck paper doesn't work. You will have to loosen the pieces of paper. Paper stuck next to each other doesn't burn easy. Only top and bottom pages will burn and you are left with even more mess. You will have to do it few papers at the time. It will get very smelly and not pleasant at all.

Shredder!

. . .
Well even if it does, it is unlikely to compromise the document owner's privacy by reading and disclosing their contents.

I would get a dog.
According to many excuses, dogs are perfect for eating bank statements and bills.

Well, I don't know about the bleach, but if the Stasi had used such a simple technique instead of simple hand tearing of documents when their shredders broke down, the archives would have remained secret for ever.

Re: Paper shredding

And what do you do with the resulting 5 litres plus of gloopy bleachy mess?

I've always found a multi-fuel burner to be the best way of disposing of unwanted paperwork.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I have a stainless steel waste paper bin which I used to burn all
the documents.I chose a rainy day when everyone was inside.
Worked out just fine.No-one seemed to notice.
Once its burning nicely there's little smoke.
Job done.
