Hit and run!

Well I was walking down the street today near Meierhofplatz. I heard a loud thud and looked around and lying dead or dying was a cat. I looked quickly in the other direction to see which car it was. Then I saw a car make a stop and it pulled over to the side and after 10 seconds drove quickly away. Fortunately I got the plate number and reported it to the police. Even traced his name and he even has a Facebook page.

And I hope he gets the full 10,000 Frank fine for such a cowardly act!

Re: Hit and run!

Isn't there a new law just come in or coming in soon that makes it an offence to drive away if you hit an animal? Hope they get the book thrown at them.

Re: Hit and run!

I have a cat and love cats. Ours is truly part of our family.
I have seen many dead cats lying in the middle of the road, and can't bear it. I always pull over, take out a pair of those petrol station gloves, and find a dignified place so that 1.000 vehicles don't pass over the poor creature.
Even if dead, it probably belonged to someone. Who is going to search for it, and hopefully not find it in a horribly-damaged state. Who may want to bury it, or say goodbye, or whatever.
I do this for squirrels too. It just seems right to pay tribute to the little creature that was.
Another crackpot idea of mine.
And, no, I wouldn't want to wear my cat as a handbag.
Or transform my husband into a diamond ring.
Yuck.

Cat or Rabbit, very difficult to tell the difference if you can't see the head.

One has flat rib bones, the other round rib bones...but which is which ?

What's in the pan on the stove for three days? Stewed squirrel!

P.S. Squirrel is the hardest word for native Italian speakers to pronounce.

Re: Hit and run!

Just in case anyone is would like to know more about the legal situation... from the good folks at Tier Im Recht:

http://www.tierimrecht.org/de/recht/...inem-heimtier/

Roughly:

Each traffic accident involving a pet animal must be reported immediately, If possible, report the accident to the owner of pet animal, the person who caused the accident must give his name and his address. If the owner cannot be found, the accident must be reported to the police. Anyone who violates this reporting requirement could be prosecuted for infringement of the road traffic law and possibly also for animal cruelty.

See also here:
http://www.tierimrecht.org/de/recht/...tier-zb-katze/

and here:
http://www.tierimrecht.org/de/recht/...r-gettet-wird/

---

And an FYI, if you see a dead animal it would be a mitzvah to file a report on the Tiermeldstelle, more here:

https://www.tierdatenbank.ch/de/faq-...ene-tiere.html

Often, despite the law above, drivers do not report hitting an animal. And the Gemeinde will often dispose of dead animals found on the road without checking for a chip or other identifiers or trying to contact the owner. Any owner of a missing pet knows how awful it is not knowing what has happened. So even if you can't help the animal, it would be a kindness to the owner to report to the Tiermeldstelle.

---

Omtatsat, good on ya!

Re: Hit and run!

Our cat was hit by a car while we were out of town this summer. Someone else found him and took him to a police station where they read his chip and found our contact details. The finder took it on him to call us and upon hearing that we would return the following weekend informed the people who keep cats that are killed frozen someplace. I did not even know this was done. The following week we were able to retrieve our poor cat and bury him in our garden - following the rules of digging a hole with a depth of 1.5m 😯. We planted a magnolia tree on top.

Maybe this should go in the TIS thread but we and our children appreciated the kindness of those who made it possible for us. And I did not even like cats very much until we got ours three years ago.

Re: Hit and run!

My present cat was also hit by a " hit and run".We found him lying on the street with a badly smashed leg and half a tail. After 3 months intensive care and operations he was back on his feet.Unfortunatly they had to remove his tail but I dont think he notices it.
It cost us 3000 CHF but because it was a " hit and run" case we were able to claim all the costs back. That was 16 years ago

Re: Hit and run!

Not long after I arrived here I hit a cat. It was on a stretch right near our home where the speed was 80 and the cat literally came out of a cornfield at full clip and I just wasn't able to avoid it. I stopped and went back to the cat but it was already gone. This was in the days before chips, and the cat had no collar. We waited until the signs went up then contacted the owners and I went around and apologised. It was a very difficult thing to do, but I can't imagine doing anything else.

Re: Hit and run!

Such accidents don't happen in the UK as the advice is, when walking on the road, to walk against the traffic - in Switzerland it is with the traffic.

Our first cat was rescued by my dad when he saw boys throwing stones at it - within a month it had been hit by a car - merely breaking its jaw. That cat was "nails"!!
