Possible move to Switzerland

Hi everyone,

Nice to meet you all!!

The company I work for are moving to Switzerland (lachen)and my husband and I are strongly consideration moving, I have 1 son age 6, I've read lots about Switzerland and it seems truly a great place to live although with relocating there are many factors to think about.

My husband would need to find employment, the company I work for would assist in a full relocation package also supporting partners to find work.

My husband and I are city people, I'm not sure we can afford Zurich....can anyone advise a large town with equally great facilities that a major city would offer, commutable to Lachen

I would need a billingual school/possibly international school, my son is slightly delayed in language so he will need extra help.

In terms of a commute to lachen, maximum time 30 mins maybe a bit more

Your recommendations would be much appreciated.

Hi, welcome.

I'd say do lots of research. Check how far your remuneration would go. What does your husband do? Without German he may struggle. Also please don't underestimate the impact of suddenly being a stay at home spouse.

At 6 your son may still be in the tail end of kindergarten as they start school at six and a half here.

Life is very very different here. Looking good and actually being good for your set of personal circumstances are not always the same.

The only two cities I can think of other than Zurich that are within 30mins (by car) from Lachen are Zug and Uster and both are of course substantially smaller than Zurich. Winterthur is too far, as is Lucerne...

Thanks for your honesty!! My husband doesn't speak German, he works in sales consultancy and by the time the move would happen my son would be 8, we've be given 2 yrs deadline, so possibly in my favour, I have time to see if this move would be viable for the family! in terms of renumeration I will know much more in a months time.

Re: Possible move to Switzerland

Hi Ladapo,

I live/work in Lachen, where there are a few multinationals as well, believe it or not. The only "big" city I can think of that you can reach from here in 30min is Zürich. Rapperswil is the next biggest one (~25.000 inhabitants), but taxes there are higher... Einsiedeln would be another alternative, but maybe not so well connected to Zürich. There is a recent post about Einsiedeln that you can search in the Forum, but I would not call it a city to be honest.

Lachen itself have most of the things you might need (Marina, Restaurants by the lake, two supermarkets, post office, a few banks, train station with good connections to Zürich, gym, "summer beach by the lake"...) but, yes, 8,000 people. You can also live in one of the towns between Zürich and Lachen (Thalwil, Horgen, Wädenswil, Pfäffikon, Altendorf). They are connected to both cities by train and, in the end, Zürich has only 390,000 inhabitants, so many of the surrounding towns might as well be considered as part of Zürich for your purposes. Wädenswil is a nice one and Thalwil has a combination of low taxes, international schools and frequent train connections to Zürich that might make it interesting for you. On the other side, it might be too residential if you are a city person and maybe a Swiss school would be an interesting option as well.

Btw, when you say commute do you mean by car or by train?
