Friday thread: Spoiler alert. Today started crap, finishes ok in the end

When I went to bed last night, I wasn't looking forward to today.

I had an early meeting planned with a long standing vendor to explain our decision to stop working with them. Apparently, I have the needed diplomacy skills, so I was voluntold by the boss for delivering the bad news. Humph!

I slept badly and woke up an hour early this morning.

Walked to the train station. Of course, it's pissing down with rain. And, of course I'm splashed and grumpy.

Train arrives, it's 3 carriages shorter than normal and packed. In a self-entitled fit of grumpiness I get on the 1st class carriage, although I wimp out and I don't sit down, like it makes a difference.

I've not had my train pass checked in a year and I figure why should today be any different?

Except it is. 4 inspectors. One guy and 3 young ladies. Even worse, I feel physically sick as I do the pathetic search through my wallet and can't find my abonnement.

"Well sir," the chief inspector rolls his eyes and shrugs "you have no ticket and you're in the 1st class carriage, it's not ok".

"I promise you I have an abonnement", I mutter weakly "please check your machine". He dutifully checks, sighs, checks again and says "sorry, no abonnement".

Standing at Cornavin, guarded by CFF staff, passed by hundreds of glaring, justifiably self-righteous holders of valid tickets is almost too much to bear. I'm a criminal and everyone knows.

"Ok" he says, "you have to show this at the CFF office when you find your abonnement", he says as he hands me a long printout "and here's your penalty for travelling in first class without a proper ticket".

I try my best pleading voice "The train was packed, it's shorter than usual, and it's pouring with rain". My arguments are unimpressive. He knows it, I know it.

"That's no excuse. You can't travel in 1st class carriage without the right ticket".

"B-b-b-but.." my lower lip trembles. I hear words coming out of my month that I have no intention of saying "it's my birthday!". I cringe. WTF did I say that for?

The three girls smile and say "oh, happy birthday" and they look at the boss.

He gives me a hard look, peers carefully at my driving license, looks me straight in the eye, looks at the girls, shrugs solemnly and says "happy birthday".

One of the girls coughs meaningfully. He looks at her, he looks at me, shrugs again, sighs deeply, dramatically rips up the ticket and with a commanding tone says "next time, you get a penalty".

I hustle away with just an admin penalty if I can find my abonnement of CHF 5. Of course I can't find it, probably dry cleaned it.

Even though it bloody rained all day, my day got better.

My meeting went just fine.

My little girl's gift to me is a ... lovely wallet. No excuses for losing my abonnement now.

And, when I went to the CFF office tonight to pay the CHF 5 admin charge, the lovely girl behind the counter grinned, let me off and told me it was a birthday present from CFF.

I still had to pay 30 chuffs for a replacement abonnement.. (TIS).

Happy Friday and have a great weekend.

Bellevue to Geneva - two/three stops. You could have bought a ticket!!

Anyway, glad it worked out and does go to show - those Swiss people that so many think of as aliens - do actually have hearts!!

Happy Birthday - just don't try it again!!! Until next year....

Myself, the few times i have jumped on a bus or a tram without a ticket. I break out in a sweat!! Knowing the fines they inflinge. 80 for the first time, 200 for the second and a maybe jail sentence for the third!!

Not like when i was a kid and it was ten francs and a stern warning. Enough to put the fear into any child. Plus the thick ear from my mum!! I guess nowadays, 40 years later, my parents would take my phone off me and reduce my internet access.

My mum dragged me to pay the fine, the man was in uniform and frightened me!! Which is good. And probably why i break out in a sweat when i jump on a bus to go one stop!!
