Knee surgeon in Zurich (for an arthroscopy)...and physiotherapist too!

Hi all,

I just got here last Saturday and will need some knee surgery fairly soon.

I think I'll try to get it refunded under the EHIC scheme as I haven't even received my resident card or got insured here, but for practical reasons (two children under 5 here), I will probably need to get surgery and then do some physio in Zurich (rather than get it done and recover in the UK).

So three questions really - and I hope your answers will be as helpful as the last time I asked something

1) How do I find a good knee surgeon/hospital and arrange for the surgery? (NB: I am pre-/outside Swiss insurance)

2) Same question about rehabilitation with a physiotherapist

3) any advice on how to find a babysitter for those few days when i may not be able to walk and the 4 to 6 weeks when I may need some help e.g. with the school run?

I live in Kreis 5 near the Viadukt and I don't have a car.

I wouldn't be too sure of that!!

If you arrived with a work contract the chances are the start date on the contract will be the start date on your permit which will be the month your Swiss health insurance starts - and if you don't sort it out quickly you'll be assigned one - and either way you'll be paying back premiums to the date you arrived.

You won't get it refunded with your EHIC card as it's not emergency treatment and if you've already registered as being a resident here the UK card is no longer valid.

You have 2 choices: either arrange your Swiss insurance quickly (yes you have up to 3 months, but don't have to take that long and if you do you'll end up with a big first bill to cover those 3 months) or pay upfront yourself and then reclaim the costs back once your Swiss insurance is in place. As you've registered as being resident you are covered from that date so any medical expenses can be claimed back.

As already said, you will be covered by Swiss health insurance from the day you register in Switzerland. You will not be able to claim back from EHIC.

Not Zürich, but can recommend Dr Parli, Hirslanden Salem Spital, Bern.

EHIC will only cover emergencies.

By Law you have to register with your Gemeinde/Commune within 8-10 days- and seek insurance, which will be backdated to the 1st of the month you arrived, and valid from thereon.

- Register for your residence permit and sign up for Swiss health insurance. Since you expect high costs, I recommend choosing the lowest deductible.

- Choose a Hausarzt/GP.

- Ask your GP for a referral to a specialist or at least a recommendation. Search the Forum in case there might be some recommendations already.

- Your GP and surgeon should be able to recommend physiotherapists. The surgeon will also write the prescription for the physio so it's covered by insurance.

- You can try agencies for babysitters or you can hire a private person. I am not sure if insurance will pay for that. As for "school runs" I am not sure what this means. Most schools are within walking distance of home and kids walk in groups. Around here the cops even regularly stop cars to ensure parents are not driving the children to school.

Welcome to Switzerland and good luck. Sounds like a painful and stressful start.

It's no longer backdated to the first of the month you arrived. You pay a pro rata amount for the first month now. They the rules about it changed it last November or December.

I've tried to find the thread with the posts in it but haven't had any luck so far.
The poster had contacted the consumer association after her insurer told her she had to pay the whole month even though she had read that she shouldn't have to. They had replied that the rules had changed and gave the date the new rule came into effect.
I'll try to find more info tomorrow when I have more time.

Wow! You didn't disappoint!

Thank you very much, I had completely misunderstood the insurance position (I thought we were only entitled to benefit from insurance after having been registered as residents for 3 months).

I'll be applying and sorting this as soon as possible.

Thank you also for the very specific information/recommendations - if anyone has any more names/addresses or sites to recommend for a surgeon/physio or babysitter, please post on!

Re: Knee surgeon in Zurich (for an arthroscopy)...and physiotherapist too!

You may be limited to 'ordinary' insurance- and to be able to get a complementary' policy, as it is a pre-existing condition. Don't worry as normal insurance cannot discriminate against pre-existing conditions, but you may be limited to which hospital or surgeon you can have without having to pay extra.
