He could have bought the car via a third party, All of the cars I bought were not sold by the registered keeper.
You'd have to name the said third party and the real owner, so that they can be then questioned instead of you
Otherwise it's plausible to believe his explanation that he just bought it from you.

Any advertisement would state the car was a private sale & sold as it is, so no further contract required.
That doesn't still free you from all liability if car turns out to be defective...

I never knew the details of the dealers who bought my cars in Schlieren, they just pay in cash & are no longer there when you have another car to sell next time.

Never had any issues, even selling a car written off by insurance. You don't seem to be aware that if you tell the seller verbally states the car is sold as is, then that is fine, contracts do not need to be in writing. As this is the normal way a private car is sold, a court will believe you. Even if you buy a car from a garage & pay extra for a guarantee it covers sweet F.A., so likely will not help either.

And you don't seem to be aware that verbal agreements are hardly provable

You want to play it safe - write a contract

Just wait until you get yourself a buyer with a sufficiently advanced case of buyers remorse, like this guy.

Well if they cant be proved the seller does not have an issue. do they!
I would rather not give someone I don't know a copy of my signature, especially if they have my address.

Re: Sell car in private

Hi Everyone,

I have a quick question. I'm selling my car because I'm moving back to USA. Today I found someone that wants to buy it. Do you know what is the process for the paperwork? Do I need to make some sort of contract? Or just go to the vehicle office and request a transfer? please help!!

Re: Sell car in private

The buyer gives you money, you give the buyer the keys and the grey card, and you hand in the plates.

Re: Sell car in private

Is that easy? Really? Do I have to go with the new owner when I give back the plates?

Thankyou for your contribution although i hardly see the context; you only need 10 posts to sell and you already have these

Re: Sell car in private

Tom is right, however:

(a) this assumes the car is not leased, i.e. you fully own it.
(b) I would recommend a simple contract like the one proposed by TCS or Autoscout24 - this mainly to protect you:
(b1) clearly state there is no warranty from your end (or maybe there still is some from the manufacturer, or something, but clearly not by you)
(b2) establish some paperwork signed by the buyer about the whole affair.

Depending on the canton and the age of the car, it may need to pass inspection before it can be registered to the new owner (using the old grey paper). This is generally paid by the seller in private deals, pros probably manage it themselves.

Then the simplest thing is to hand over car, keys and grey document in exchange for cash. There is also the option to meet in a bank and to do/confirm a transfer from account to account.

In all cases, the plates belong to you, not to the buyer or the vehicle.
