Is he real? (spoiler alert)

The question from nowhere that I should've expected from my 8 year old. Not the "where do babies come from?" Oh no. A much tougher one instead.

"Daddy", "Is father Christmas, real?" My 8 year old.

"Err, umm, aah, why do you ask?" My cunning tactic to buy time.

"Well, all the other children in my class are laughing because I still think he's real".

"Oh. Errm - what about the mince pies and the carrot and glass of milk we left out for him last year. He ate those, didn't he?"

"No daddy, the bites on the carrot are from your teeth" she said, "And, I know how much you like mince pies", short pause as she glances at my beer belly. "Are you Father Christmas?"

"b-b-but, you saw him at the grotto last year.."

"No daddy, that was the fake one. That's what MUMMY said". I glare at mummy's back as she suddenly leaves the room.

Me, a little lost for words.. gives it the best I've got. "Time to brush your teeth and get ready for bed". Phew. Dodged that one.

Do you have any better comebacks? Is it time for the truth?

Happy Thanksgiving EF!

8 is quite little still. Preserve the myth for as long as you can.

I tried "Well, I suppose for him to visit on Christmas Eve, it helps if you believe in him" ...

Nooooo hold onto every last little bit of magic. Tell all those non believers to sod off, especially those pesky 8 year olds.

I'm a lot older than 8 and I still believe..

Re: Is he real? (spoiler alert)

A father asked his 10-year old son if he knew about the birds and the bees.
"I don't want to know," the child said, bursting into tears. "Promise me you won't tell me."

Confused, the father asked what was wrong.

The boy sobbed, "When I was six, I was told that there's no Easter Bunny. At seven, you told me that there's no Tooth Fairy. When I was eight, I had to learn that there is no Santa Claus. If you're going to tell me that grown-ups don't have sex, I'll have nothing left to live for."

Re: Is he real? (spoiler alert)

Let's debunk the idea. Father Christmas is the most outdated profession that kids don't fall for anymore. And don't let me start with storks as you are better off getting more attention explaining how your mom and dad pulled it off, i.e. a midnight quickie in the chevy to bring them into this amazing world.

Psychologists are urging parents not to "trick" their children into believing in Father Christmas because it undetermines "parental trustworthiness"

It makes me sad if little ones won't grow up believing in Father Christmas. There is so little magic left in the world, please don't take Santa away!

Back home, presents are brought by baby Jesus, not Santa. So this raises some logistic problems in a house that has strained away from religion...

My mom's worse memory from her childhood is finding that the presents were actually coming from the parents, not some mystical creature.

I am actually a little torn on what to do with my son. Do I bring him up to the cold hard -but honest- truth, or do I brace myself for utter disappointment in 8 years...

The cynic in me found out the truth at about 6 years. I kept writing letters till I was 12, to make my mom happy and cherish the "X-mas feeling" a little longer...

Re: Is he real? (spoiler alert)

Apparently once you stop believing in Father Christmas you start receiving socks and underwear as presents.

I started using the Santa video, which works a charm. Also, I typed out a letter from Santa in curly font on the computer (so as to disguise my handwriting), printed it out on normal paper then ripped the edges a bit, put it in a hot-ish oven (TOP TIP: WATCH IT LIKE A HAWK!!) to let it brown and become like old parchment, rolled it up and bound it with ribbon and left it to be -ahem- "found".

Kept the myth alive for another couple of years...

Well now we know where all society's problems stem from. I hope these psychologists got a Nobel peace prize or something. FFS.

Re: Is he real? (spoiler alert)

According to my mom I figured it out the year I was 5... she knew because she overheard me explaining Santa Claus to my grandma as "a game adults play to have fun at Christmas."

Which is to this day exactly how I like to think of it. It's about the joyful suspension of disbelief and in that spirit it's no different, no more deceitful, than crawling around the living room on all fours playing "horsey" for your children. You know you're not a horse, they know you're not a horse... and yet you still indulge them with your best whinnying noises: not because you're trying to trick them into believing you, but because games are more fun when we can pretend they're real.

Same for me with Santa Claus, the plate of cookies and the chimney and the NORAD tracker. It's a thrilling, elaborate, weeks-long annual game of let's-pretend - and as long as it's conducted in that spirit by parents, I feel like children whenever they do find out don't have to be traumatized, they can simply be invited into the game. Me, I played along gleefully for another 12 years (till my youngest sibling grew out of it) and I'm thoroughly enjoying it again now with my own kids.

(What I will do is have Santa's presents to them be the sensible cheap stuff, pajamas and picture books... things that everybody's family can afford. Because it sucks to have to explain why Santa brought one kid an ipad/xbox/whatever but didn't bring the same to another kid who also asked for it.)

That brings back memories. Our city had a major NORAD Air Force Base (tracking radars all around, scrambling jets all hours of the night, etc.) and as kids, we thought it so cool that we could watch him on TV.

Later, we realized Santa was taking the same ingress route as those damn commies...

Our kids were aware from a very early age that Santa doesn't exist. We taught them to be diplomatic on the subject with their friends. It didn't spoil the magic of Christmas for them

My parents also never tried to convince us of the reality of Santa. I remember being terrribly excited on Christmas eve, knowing that while I was asleep my mum would sneak into my room with a carrier bag full of pressies, and hang it on the end of my bed. I never caught her doing it.

Santa is merely part of the tradition of celebrating Saturnalia. Just not an important part in my family.

If you think there's little magic left in the world, start reading articles on phys.org and educate yourself.

Re: Is he real? (spoiler alert)

I was Osterhase,Zahnfee, Samichlaus, Christchindli* in personalunion for a very long time and happy that my 3 girls believed in this little bit of magic until they were almost 10-ish.

I had fun prepping things (alike Sandgrounders letter making) and nowadays my girls range from 26 to 18 and all of them say, that these things are some of the fondest memories they have from their childhood.

Don't take away that little magic, glittery sprinking of fairy dust over a childhood, the time they can really BE children is sooooo short......too quick they have to go to school, then uni or apprenticeship and then work 50 years 'til retirement....compared to that...the few years of childhood are too short!
