Re: Are you a expat or a ???????

I started as an expat, then I became an immigrant, and finally I expatriated.

Re: Are you a expat or a ???????

It's been a great discussion, and personally and i always though anybody living outside of their birth country is an immigrant until they be came a legal citizen. and that people just thought of themselves as ex-pats.

That would have been easily solved if you had googled both terms.

What is your interest in Switzerland? You state NY as the place you live?

Re: Are you a expat or a ???????

I traveled there on a regular basis.

the reason the article is actually a pretty good one is because At the end of the day I've only ever heard of white person referred to themselves as an ex-pat, and living in a extremely multicultural neighborhood I know this firsthand regardless of Google or Webster's dictionaries definition. this is how people self identify in my experience.

I always considered myself an expat until I became a citizen, at which point I considered myself in immigrant.

Well, here's another black swan for you: I'm white and I'm an immigrant.

So what do you suggest that I read instead?
Read what you like. I doubt you'll be swayed by my personal rhetoric, and to be honest that's probably a good thing.

And your evidence for this is?
Talk to the 100s of British expats in Dordogneshire- and see how they consider themselves compared to the FRENCH of North-African origins in France. Or to the Swiss, Germans and Brits on the Spanish Costas ... and how they compare themselves to North AFricans who are born and bred, and several generation there + check the list above (don't speak the language even after 10+ years, own food delivery vans and DIY + builders direct from UK, own English speaking Churches + different denomination to the locals, private English school for those with children, etc, etc (including all those who illegally go and use NHS for all their treatment in UK),.

Have you spoken to 100s of British residents in Dordogneshire?

Via a French Forum I used to belong to - yes- not just Dordogneshire but all the parts of France where large expat communities are. Plus a Forum in the Canaries too because daughter lived there.

Not British then .... or are you AWOL?

Always Wearing Ophelia's Lingerie? Not I. British once, a few generations back; but didn't count for the Brexit vote. Mainly trying to escape every army.

Because the kind of nutters who frequent internet forums are entirely representative of the population at large!

Anyway, what's wrong with maintaining one's own culture in another country? Don't you believe in multiculturalism?

Re: Are you a expat or a ???????

Oh yes I do - if it works both ways. What is intolerable is those talking about 'Blighty gone to dogs because .... from people who do exactly the same themselves when abroad- and even worse, consider themselves entitled to doing all the things mentionned in previous posts - whereas they will criticise local citizens for doing so, because they are of a different origin (North AFricans generally in France).

You know that of course.

What are you talking about? It does work both ways, but it sounds like you'd rather it didn't.

On the one hand you're proud to have taken a bunch of Bangladeshi kids for curry in Brick Lane, then on the other you're always banging on about British expatriates sending their children to international schools.

Sounds to me like your main problem is with the fact that they're British, not with the fact that they're just doing what immigrants do everywhere in the world as soon as there are enough of them to form a community.

I have to agree with this observation; I've witnessed, heard and read very similar accounts. It could be about a certain type of colonial mindset.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to themselves as expats - it's just a label, and like most is generally applied in the third person.

But in terms of the 'expat' cultural mindset, if such a thing exists, I've found no difference at all between people of different skin colours. In my experience the tendency to behave in the stereotypical expat ways discussed here is generally based more on professionall, and thereby financial, status than national or racial origins. If you want to believe that it's only white people that come to Switzerland to work in highly-paid jobs in banking, pharmaceuticals and IT then I think that says more about you than it does about anyone else.

I certainly have. I've even done so myself. But that was before EF existed.

Agreed, I've certainly known blacks who referred to themselves as expats, not just whites.
