British, or British Isles, refers to the island group containing Great Britain, Ireland, and a multitude of smaller islands. Ireland (including the RoI) are part of the British Isles, just as Northern Ireland is part of Ireland.
If you want to be a pedant about it, then Britain should in reality be called Albion, which is the actual name of the largest of the British isles - so Britain is incorrect, were we really following the geographical terms as you claim, the country should be, in reality, called Great Albion and Northern Ireland. Or Northern Hibernia.
Quote:
I suspect many NIers get miffed at Irish talking about Ireland as a single political entity, rather than the country of the Rupublic of Ireland as well as the UK part of Northern Ireland.
The Northern Hibernians, they're more than welcome to call themselves whatever they like although a large number of them are not simply British, but in fact also Irish, on account of having Irish (Republic) passports - much like an rapidly increasing number of persons from Great Albion, ever since Brexit.

Hope that clarifies the matter with suitable pedantry.

188K US$ - not bad! but I don't understand the bad ratings for social life - just visit one (of the many) English pubs!
One expat earning 3mln will lift 50 others who earn $120k to that average. What's the median income?

On the plus side, there's a piece about Zurich in Vogue...
"Zurich’s mayor was famous for instructing his residents not to shower after 10:00 p.m."

Umm, for the past 8 years the mayor of Zurich has been a lesbian from Iowa City.

I don't think that she would much appreciate being referred to as "he".

No - the distribution is more like "normal (or Gaussian distribution") : "....Just under 30 percent of expats earned more than $200,000 in Switzerland "

OK - I'll bite.

Irish is not a subset of British. Irish can mean several things, such as referring to the Irish people, to the island of Ireland as a whole or to the Republic of Ireland.

British can mean several things - English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish are subsets of British (although a large minority of Northern Irish consider themselves Irish and not British and have the passports to prove it). English, Scots and Welsh *may* consider themselves to be only those things and not British but for the time being at least legally there is only British nationality.

If you'd have said "British Isles pubs" it would have been clumsy but not incorrect (although the Irish themselves may avoid the term "British Isles" pretty much everyone else calls them that), the British Isles comprising the islands of Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) and Ireland (Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland). I'll ignore the smaller islands and their exact status (Man, Jersey etc).

The United Kingdom in its present form (look on the front of a British passport) is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".

The Republic of Ireland, as Aeneas has said, has been independent from the United Kingdom for a century. Some of the issues are, alas, still not resolved. Saying that "Irish" is part of "British" is asking for trouble.

We all know that the overzealous use of the term British is so that the BBC can claim actors like Michael Fassbender, Saoirse Ronan or Richard Harris are 'British'.

Having said this, I've actually encountered English people over the years who are genuinely oblivious to the fact that the UK and RoI are separate countries.

Yes I did, in England and in New England. I just don't get what's special about them: dark, stinky, and no decent girls around.

Most people I meet are.. even some post office workers stamping letters/cards don't even know that Northern Ireland is a part of the UK, and not a part of the South. By default, I explain whether the explanation is needed or not, which I am sure irritates the few who know the difference

Mr. Swisstree is from NornIron and I grew up in the England and in Ireland.
