Selling a car in Switzerland as a foreigner (Urgent)

Hi there,

I hope this is a right page and somebody here will be able to help me.

I am going to buy a car outside EU, travel and finish my road trip probably in Switzerland (I'm Czech), where I'd like to get rid of it and sell it (by the fastest way-car dealer, I guess). I've already found out how much I'd pay etc. but : Do I need to have a residence permit or citizenship to be able to sell it? I couldn't find this information but maybe I just overlooked it. I'll be on my way in few says, so I anybody knows it would help me a lot.

Thank you, J.

Anything is possible - but expect offers of around MINUS 200chf IE you pay for someone to take the car.

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland as a foreigner (Urgent)

No, but the buyer will have to IMPORT IT.
So there will be process to have it exported first, and then imported in CH.

So nothing quick.

Potentially only some specialized people would buy it from you in CH, for low value and in hope of making profit. If it's old car it's even more unlikely as they "export them" to resell them in EU, for small profit.

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland as a foreigner (Urgent)

If you do not properly import it yourself do not expect any/much money for it.
As a tourist you are allowed to import it tax and duty free temporarily w/o any paperwork under the conditions 1) only you use the car in Switzerland 2) You yourself export it within one year.
As you do not intend to drive it out of the country you would be in violation of the custom law. A potential buyer would have to do a lot of paperwork to sort the cars tax and duty status. As dodgyken says be prepared to pay for the joy to getting rid of it.

An other option is to properly import it when you drive it into Switzerland. Here the process how to officially import a car: https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home...es--cars-.html

And even than be prepared to sell way bellow market value when you have to sell fast.

Awesome mentality that someone joins a forum and starts with an "urgent" question...

On the other hand, it's a place full of people with experience, and don't see as that bad to try to get information "first". A bit perplex as joining a forum, present yourself forever, detail profile, etc... so much!

I'd say the OP is a "instant expat" who seems to have done the entire process of months of stuff in a quick transaction (something which likely not going to happen ). I dont think is that bad to be noted.

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland as a foreigner (Urgent)

what car is it? how old?

as others have said, you will need to pay someone to take it, been there, done that, since we did it the rules have be tightened up iirc so the lightly hood of you finding a scrap dealer willing to take it is pretty remote, given it wont have any swiss docs. 10 years ago I paid 175chf for the scrappy to take the car, which I drove to him and was working 100% (UK car)

Especially with CO2 tax, the buyer could be in for a LOT of money, as targets were reduced in 2017...

CO2 tax is only applicable for imported cars that are less than 6 months old after first registration, (in whichever country that may be)

The OP mentiones that the car will be bought "outside the EU" which may give additional problems with a Certificate of Conformity (COC) an essential document to get the car Swiss registered at an acceptable price.

You need no permit to privately sell a car

Usually people steal the car in Switzerland and sell it in a non-EU country - not the other way round.

Yes, I've already gone throught all those websites and proper import is the way which seems to be the best. Considering that car which I'm buying is not longer than one yr old (cheap car - good friends abroad ), when imported all paperwork was done and everything was paid. Then selling (consignment sale) properly registered car by local car dealer shouldn't be a problem and I shouldn't loose any money on it. Just thinking

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland as a foreigner (Urgent)

Depends where you are importing it from, and what paperwork it has with it (COC, etc).

Importation can cost several thousand CHF if you don't import it when moving here as part of your personal goods, and no-one is going to buy a car from a non-resident except at fire-sale prices.

VW Passat, 014-015. Buy, proper import, paperwork done, everything paid -> properly registered, ready for consignment sale. Well, thats how I thought it's going to work.

Re: Selling a car in Switzerland as a foreigner (Urgent)

Depends how old car is, you may consider to sell it for export. There are lot of guys looking for export car (tutti.ch or ricardo.ch) just type "export autos gesucht", for my country car must be Euro 3 so aprox 2001 and newer. This is only possible if that car is registred on your name in original country 'cos you need to make somekind of contract. Good luck.

to import it you'll need swiss insurance, are you resident? to get swiss number plates you'll also need an address

if you don't live here, or use someone who does, then I can't see any way you'll be able to do it, to import is a lot of paper work, stamps and general banging your head against a brick wall

if fact reading your posts again, you don't live here - right? you are just driving here and want to sell your car then go back home? did someone tell you Swiss cars sell for much higher prices? well, yes SWISS cars do, not dodgy imported Czech cars with impossible to check histories. Unless this car is a real give away price the I can't imagine anyone here touching it with a barge pole, and of course you would have import duties etc pay at the boarder (based on the value of a similar SWISS car)

That's what I was affraid of and wasn't sure about, thank you for those informations. It will be just easier sell it at home then.

No need for plates, thus no need for insurance. Just sell as is with CoC and form 13.20.

The one thing OP can forget is a consignment sale. Hardly any dealer will do it.
