What very strange things to say to your kid. Or anyone, really.

Chances are they're kids being kids so who gives a toss. Granted, this is the first time I read/heard about "racism" towards the English rather than towards Turks (don't most English probably look pretty damn similar to most Swiss?). So what are these "racist jibes" then?
You should see the funny looks my husband and I get when we turn up at the badi in our summer garb. I don't think Switzerland is ready for us English salaciously flashing a cheeky ankle...

...English are stupid ...
Oh great. Even Albanian and Kosovan kids have picked up on Brexit.

Some kids did try to tease my son about him being English when he was in secondary. He used to respond to them with a stream of English. It was nonsensical - but they didn't know that, and it shut them up. In confusion I think.

One of my daughters responded to teasing from a couple of peers in the first year of secondary be violently over-reacting (far more noise than activity though). This gained her a reputation of being generally nice but a bit of a nutter - too much bother to tease.

My other daughter lived in a dream world at that age so not much affected her. She didn't get teased because it wasn't worth the effort.

If things get out of hand though, do report it to the teachers and insist (very politely) that action is taken. We had to do this a few times, and it did work.

One thing they all knew was that a) we would support them to the hilt b) never back down to bullies. They're all now fairly well adjusted as adults. My kids are half SE-Asian/British.

Oh no it wasn't strange at all, you wouldn't know this but they have already told my daughter how lucky she is and that they wish that they could also speak English ! It was a very passive remark said in a very passive way 😊

Re: Racist 8 years olds at my daughters school

You lot are really great you know!!

About an hour after I posted this the same girls knocked for my daughter to play!! She told them she couldn't come out because she had a poorly leg and also because of what they said about her earlier. Completely unprompted by myself at that time. I'm glad that she chose to say about her leg first because I understand that she knows now that they shouldn't have said that but also that she will continue to be friends with them, rather than just refuse outright and be rude.

You are all right, their parents could be all smiles to our faces and then who knows what's said behind closed doors. We all smile are friendly , give each other lifts if we see each other etc but never socialise in each other's homes , our children do and we all text each other etc about times to come home .

I know that if I say anything to the parents it will be taken seriously and respectfully.

I'm glad that my daughter is smart enough to understand that the children don't know what racism is really and I'm hoping that they will get bored. I know it goes on in the school as another mixed race family approached me and asked if my daughter had experienced what theirs had.

There's been lot of jealousy over Christmas as we celebrate it and my daughters friends don't .

I've calmed down now and from your comments I have decided to keep quiet for a bit, if it happens again then I'll speak to the mums of the other children.

I'll post on here again if I have any updates.

Thank you for listening

It took me about 20 years to realise that our kids follow their parents.
Happily, I think I'm still in the safe zone

Its always been Kosovo vs Albania vs Turkey. They have been at each other for centuries. Got nothing to do with English.

Hi,

There are a few children who have been really racist to my 8 year old daughter.
To be honest I just tell her to laugh it off , she's half Turkish and half English. We are the only English people in our area , but there are untold Turks!! They only use English racist jibes to her not Turkish!!! The children are from Albania and Kosova. The mothers are nice and I will nicely speak to them when I see them . The children have been to our apartment and eve visited family with us !!

Am I right saying to my daughter that they are only picking on her English side because we are a minority here and that they wouldn't dare to say anything Turkish related because there's loads of Turks. I've also told her that they are probably a bit jealous because they are all learning English at school and we can all speak it.

I don't want to make a huge drama as they are just st little girls at the end of the day, but I also don't want my daughter to think that racism is ok. Do you think i am right?

Exactly. It's great that the parents know, and make sure their children know that as well.

Re: Racist 8 years olds at my daughters school

When my son was in Swiss Geman Krippe in Basel he informed me one day that no one including him wanted to play with the new boy as he spoke differently. A little concerned I addressed this to the teachers presuming he had some speach difficulties. Their answer was that he was from Bern! So even the Swiss are targets...

Swiss gun law:

"Foreigners with the following citizenship are explicitly excluded from the right to possess weapons: Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Algeria and Albania."

I'm sure there's a very good reason for this.

Not really. You'd have to be English (or British, at least) to understand, but we know that we're very lucky to have the natural advantages or nationality gives us. I'm not talking about passports or anything like that, just the fact that wherever we go in the World, we know that the locals are jealous.

They may love us or hate us, but they, and we, know that we're simply better than they are

This is the true reason behind the taunting, and the sooner she understands this the better.

Tom
These days the food in the UK is one of the few things I actually look forward to when I have to go over there. Compared to rural France and Switzerland it's a gourmet paradise.

My son has had kids make comments about his "Englishness". Snippy comments about "being a gentleman" and "drinking tea" or the more imaginative "you must live in a tiny house and eat greasy food"

It's not really what I'd call racist in the true sense of the word.

Kids tend to pick on other kids by finding the slightest difference and making a big song and dance about it. It's especially gratifying if the intended victim gets in a state about it.

From my experience I've told my son just to not react or, at best, say "so what?" and walk away.

What sort of stuff is your daughter having to deal with?

Maybe we should get your daughter and my son together and they can "drink tea" and have some "greasy food" together...

Tell them not to mix up the English with the Scots who are far worse, live in wooden huts and have porridge and herrings for breakfast, Haggis for lunch and mix the two with deep fried Mars bars for tea!
