Plastic bag disposal

Hi,
Over the year I have collected a LOT of plastic bags from packaging and shopping. Any suggestions on if there is a way to send them to recycle or just have to throw them in garbage?
thanks,

Take some with you when you go shopping and re-use them.

Re: Plastic bag disposal

What does everyone do with the plastic bags from the veggie department? When I buy a dozen carrots, I get one of the thin clear bags provided. I then end up shoving the empty bags into a single bag once I am home. Can these be recycle somewhere?

They are obviously too small, have barcode stickers on them and often torn to be of any use elsewhere...

Re: Plastic bag disposal

Occasionally I seem to acquire a few more than I'm likely to re-use (mostly carry my own shopping bags). I fold them neatly and take them along to one of our local serve-yourself farm shops. Folk sometimes go in when just out for a stroll and have no bag with them.

There's a little pile there and I add mine to it.

Just throw them in the garbage. All household garbage in Switzerland is incinerated and the waste heat is used for heating or industrial purposes. No need to feel bad about it.

As for the more stable ones, the Brockenhaus as suggested above might be a good idea.

Re: Plastic bag disposal

Brocki as suggested, market traders especially on fleamarkets are also keen to get them....you might even get lucky on a farmers market, that they'd like to take them off your hands (provided their are clean enough to use for foodstuff)

Our library here is also keen on such bags...or perhaps a Kindergarten/KITA (for craft projects) mightt ake them off your hand...

I use the smaller ones to line the bins in the bathrooms and when the 35lt bin bag isn't quite full enough to be binned yet, it goes out on the balcony and use such smaller bags for the garbage until the Müve-bag is really full to go into the container outside.

Depends on your definition of "problem" ....

Frankly to have to ask on a public forum, what to do with used plastic bags, seems as if the OP may have a problem somewhere.

Re: Plastic bag disposal

They can be recycled at the Zugerland Mall recycling center. But that might be out of your way.

I dunno. Sillier things have asked on here before. Why not post and hear other people's uses for them - farmers' markets etc. Make more sense than putting them into the garbage. Like EE I use the little ones too. We keep fruit and vegetables in the cellar and when I want to bring up a cucumber, a couple of apples and an orange or two the bags are quite useful.

No, not really, especially if you have a large amount to get rid off safely and want to know about options: recycling, Brockenhaus etc.

I wouldn't ask on a forum cos' I can ask my Swiss neighbors or ring the Gemeinde, but not everyone is comfortable, or knows enough German to ask locally.. but then this is what the English forum is for: to ask questions about life in CH; questions you wouldn't ever need to ask in your home country.

Why insult the OP? No need.

Re: Plastic bag disposal

Migros supermarkets usually have a bin for PET (that's the transparent plastic used for bottles for water and soft-drinks).

There is a separate bin for other plastic (sometimes labled "Milchflaschen" = milk bottles).

I was recently told that - as a new means of recylcing - Migros now collects ALL sorts of plastic in that Milchflaschen bin. Very good news!

Migros's own guidance on the topic makes it clear that while they take plastic bottles in general (no mention is made of bags) in that bin, there are exceptions such as PET (they go in the PET bin of course) and those used for gardening or car products.

We were told that, about ALL plastics, in two different Migros supermarkets.
@eejit, Would you please re-post the link to their info? It doesn't seem to be working. Thanks.

Re: Plastic bag disposal

Aldi has started taking some plastic packaging now. It does not say exactly what kind, but "folio" which I am guessing will include the transparent bags used for vegetables.

Re: Plastic bag disposal

At the entrance to my local LIDL is the recycling "center" with a slot for plastic foil, ie plastic bags.
