WWZ internet quality / offer ?

I'm moving to Zug and there's no UPC Cablecom at my street for cable internet, just WWZ https://www.quickline.ch/internet/

Their prices are more or less the same as UPC, so my questions are:

1) is the latency to European servers good? (gamers will understand )
2) do they make any offer for new customers or from time to time?
3) is the customer support / service good?

WWZ is excellent. We've had it for six months with no downtime of which I am aware. They just added an extra 50Mbs on for no extra charge so we've got 250Mbs.

That may answer 3. I

f there are some test scripts or something you want me to run for 1. then let me know.

Not aware of any deals for 2.

Re: WWZ internet quality / offer ?

@Tom1234: Thanks for the info! I am a bit confused btw on their offer for "internet" and "internet fibre", which are priced the same; one would expect fibre to be more expensive..

As for tests, unless you don't play any games, you can always check on speedtest.net; pick any european server (e.g. in London, Germany etc) and the Ping (at the corner, measured in milliseconds) is what i'm interested in

@Troublawesome: I didn't know Sunrise offers internet in Zug. I'll sure check it! PS: Ευχαριστώ

I think Internet Fibre is fibre directly into your dwelling. A few new builds have this.
Old places have fibre up the street and then coax into your house.

Prices for both are the same as speeds are currently the same and copper can manage 500Mbs.

They'll be a point in the future though when fibre all the way will be needed for greater speeds.
Then the price will probably be higher.

I thought you wanted something more specific.

I just tried various servers in London and got around 23mS to 25mS ping times.

1) I don't have fiber in my area, using ADSL. Latency is very good.
2) Yes. First 3 months are free for new customers. Sometimes other promos show up.
3) I'm very happy with them. They even emailed me warning that Paramouth picture is chasing me for torrent download a movie from them. Also I had a very tecnical question regardinga NAS server with their router. They E-Mailed me back explaining everything very well and were very helpful. 5* there

My contract was 50mbps TV and phone on 60.-.

They suddenly upgraded their offers to 100mbps tv and phone of 75. They gave he the 100mb on the day but my original price from the contract remained

Re: WWZ internet quality / offer ?

Absolutely no complaints with WWZ. The only thing is that they tried to sell me their "pre-configured" wireless router for something like 160 CHF.

Got a good dlink one instead and it's fine.

i visited the shop they have in Metalli and i didn't quite understand this part; the employee said you pay for the activation fee ca. 70 CHF, and if you want the wifi router you pay more for "administration & setup cost"

When i said i can setup a router myself, the answer was that it's not possible, the only other option is get the basic (no wifi) router and plug an external one you already own.

Am i losing something here? UPC gave me their latest wifi modem (the white box) for free..

Yes the activation cost something like that. It's a one time payment. Also you pay the CA-card for the TV if you want one.

The modem is free but there is no router / wireless / switch included. You can buy by yourself something like this.

I didn't wanted so many boxes and cable mess so I bought their "special" Technicolor TC7230 for +100.- and a CA card for TV.

Don't get the TC7230. The wireless is crap. You have very limited network configurations possible. I later had to get my own router and turned the TC7230 into a modem (bridge mode) only.

Both routers are the same unit.

The 'basic' unit has wifi turned off in software and only the first of the four LAN sockets enabled.

I believe you can also ask for no router at all... only the modem

At least 4 months ago when I went to Metalli they still had it...

That's what I requested but I got the wifi router/cable modem disabled as I described in my previous post.

Re: WWZ internet quality / offer ?

coming back to this, just to clarify:

since the "wifi" Technicolor TC7230 router is not very good,
1) i should ask only for the modem
2) and then get a wlan router (i.e. the device for in-house wifi coverage, right?)

correct?

At the risk of repeating myself:

I asked for the modem only but got the Technicolor TC7230 wifi router/modem with wifi disabled disabled and only one LAN port enabled.

Whether you get a choice, I don't know. I wasn't offered a choice.

I bought my own wifi-router and plugged it into the LAN port of the TC7230.

Re: WWZ internet quality / offer ?

ok guys, i've been doing my homework (especially reading Tom's issues on the other other) and i tend towards the simple WWZ modem + 3rd party router solution

Questions:

1) Netgear AC1200 (model R6220, ~70 CHF) or Netgear AC1750 (modem R6400, ~100 CHF) ?

There is apparently a price difference, and actually the R6400 is more expensive than Technicolor TC7230, but if it offers a more reliable connection, plus you keep the router if your leave WWZ, that should compensate the extra cost.

I'm not sure which one to choose, but here's some info that might indicate the best option:
- the floor space is ~80 m2, not many walls/furniture in straight line
- not a lot of wifi connected devices (a couple phones, a TV and a laptop - that's all)
- gaming on desktop PC is important, i guess the gigabit ethernet ports and the QoS should suffice (desktop PC will be the only device with wired connection)
- i don't want to exceed 100 CHF and end up using the 50% of the router's capabilities; for example i don't see myself using the "ReadyCloud", "ReadyShare", VPN and FTP functions of R6400

2) Is it easy (plug&play) to setup the router? Does WWZ provide free technical support for this? I know how to change most settings for a WAN, but never tried this topology (modem + router) before.

Yes, it's pretty much plug and play. Connect a lead from the first port of the modem (the top one) to the I/P port of the router (the yellow one).

Let it do it's stuff.
