Are there some huge import duties? or is it just the supermarket markup? where do the restaurants buy the meat? and what is the typical gross margin restaurants (in Zurich or Geneva) make on beef steaks?

P.S. because of another thread I have a bad reputation on this forum. Please answer politely, this is just a question out of curiosity, I'm not complaining about anything.
because:

local meat is expensive
there are tariffs on import
swiss supermarkets also have a higher price

if you live close to the border you can easily buy and import from neighbouring countries and pay much less.

Today I eat water, how close is that to homeopathy?
It is just a detox thing, the idea of meat right now is a bit ott.

Arašíd - I think you will have to let go of the idea of buying in CH for peanuts. Anything. Unless you participate in the national sport of sales watch and chase. It is not a bad hobby, I guess.

It can be quite lucrative, of course subject to household size and eating habits. For instance Lidl has whole beef filets on offer for 45.- per kg.

The difference is "your view" isn't necessarily the "Swiss view".

It's easy to eat meat at reduced prices at least 2 or 3 times a week (well "easy" if you have a modicum of commonsense, obvs ). Every week the supermarkets have some kind of meat product on special offer and if you hit the shops around 5pm, you can often pick up really good cuts of meat for a 50% discount.
It's an odd day if I don't eat meat or fish twice a day!

Lidl for poultry and fish, TopCC/Aligro or a local butcher for beef and lamb, Asian supermarkets for prawn, Bettio for charcuterie.

I am not a vegan anymore, but seriously - who would want to eat expensive meat often, any meat often, in fact.
Me I am eating mostly meat, vegetables and fruits. Which is very expensive diet in Switzerland. My usual portion is 300-500 grams
for me there are three categories of meat here:
- cheap (but still not inexpensive) meat from supermarkets. Low quality, boring, too lean and usually in small thin pieces. Exceptions: lamb (Swiss and imported) meat, duck breasts, premium cuts from South America (Spar)
- premium pieces (Swiss dry aged, US, Kobe,...), good but sadly very very expensive. It's almost cheaper to fly somewhere for a weekend and enjoy great dinners there, than buying this here.
-meat I got directly from farmer: I have a great source of Dexter beef from local farmer. Taste is great, price is much lower than the supermarket (20 chf/kilo, boneless, mixture of different pieces). Downside: It's only available every few months and I only have a small freezer. Bonus: I can always get a photo of the animal when it was still happily jumping on the green Swiss pasture.

btw. getting meat hear is still waaaaaaaay easier than getting an edible fish

I live a few meters off the lake shore and run there almost daily...all those lake restos offer local fish. There is a fishermen street, too, right at the lake, they will sell you fresh fish. On the other hand, the fish I ate weren't so nice. Muddy tasting. I'd prefer to cook it myself but feel a tad sad for them. You can get fish here quite easily but it will be your ordinary lake fish, nothing fancy.

I eat red meat usually twice a day. Since 2 weeks ago, I've been trying to reduce with a view to eating red meat only twice per week, but finding it somewhat challenging.

I'm still eating on average red meat once per day but have managed to reduce the amounts and replace the odd meal with fish or veggies.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but if anything then meat is too cheap. Meat consumption is too high when compared to the recommended daily intake, it is bad for the environment and last but not least farmers (not only in Switzerland) are heavily subsidized with tax money.

...or eating out. Thinking of it, when I was a student it didn't even cross my mind to eat out, like in a proper restaurant - well, anything else apart from a slice of pizza and a kebab, that kind of stuff.

I could have spent hours at a table with my friends, just with an Ice Tea or a beer. I just knew it's part of the student deal.

Seen from this angle everything's too cheap.

No cars, no holidays by plane would go a long ways in that direction. Get rid of central heating, limit daily commuting, ban products manufactured overseas (mostly in Asia) from local shops and you're probably there.

Perhaps also get rid of stuff that relies on rare earth elements as their production is very damaging to the environment. So also ban solar cells, all modern accus (including those in hybrid cars and cell phones), LEDs, most screen types, and probably a whole lot more.

Who's willing to go that far? Who's willing to give up their current lifestyle?

That's a lot of meat for the rest of us
Soylent Green etc

Which two thirds though?

Do we do it on age, "Logan's Run" style?
Or via genocide: lots of Lebensraum to expand into.

No, not the age, I am too old for it
Let's say: by the ability of "meat eating"

Starting with "Lebensraum", I'm edging towards closure via Godwin's law.

I thought we could open Zollikerberg's borders

I hate to think of all those poor murderers with insufficient victims. Perhaps the gemeinde could pay for an incinerator so the woods don't get too full?

EDIT: What am I thinking, incinerating the bodies would be a terrible idea. They should be butchered up, minced and sold to make lasagna for UK supermarkets.

Perhaps with meat but milk is definitely too cheap. Loads of Swiss farmers (and other European farmers) are getting out of dairy as they can't make an income out of it.
