I'm not trying to argue that one shouldn't eat meat. That's a personal decision everybody has to make for oneself.

But to quickly address your points: reducing meat consumption is very easily done, there are many easily available, cheap and healthy alternatives. It is true that we could reduce the release of greenhouse gases by reducing traveling and by not relying too much on all sorts of electronic gimmicks. However, one should keep in mind, that firstly agriculture is one of the main reasons for greenhouse gas release (up to a third according to these studies, of course this does not only include meat production) and secondly that not using computers or cars are options that are not easily available to many people, e.g. as they are a necessity to make an income.

True. However, I still stand by my unpopular opinion
I simply can't stand anymore this argument on greenhouse gases

PS: eating meat IS the normal thing from a nature stand point, man has been doing it for thousands of years and the human body is completely used to it.

What has been shown in medical studies, and it's the only thing in which I agree with you, is that excess consumption of red meat can indeed cause cancer. But it is EXCESS, someone who eats it only and everyday. There is no difference in cancer incidence between people who eat red meat sometimes during the week and those who do not eat red meat at all.

I eat fish in most of my meals but at least twice a week I NEED to eat one of this :

Which is exactly the position I argued for. I explicitly said that I do not advocate not to eat meat, but to reduce the meat consumption.

Eating meat twice a week - or even once a day - unfortunately isn't the norm. Most people nowadays eat meat two or three times a day. Which indeed is NOT what the diet in the past of the human history was consisting of. And the other points are true too. Meat production does take much more resources than producing vegetables.

In German..

I do eat meat (too often) myself.. but I won't deny facts about it.

.

Trying to convince some people of that is pretty impossible on this forum.

Anyone want a paleo chocolate muffin?

This is the item to keep an eye open on at the moment in Denner......Fillet of beef. Currently at 25% off, but will be 50% off in a day or so. There's over 30 packs of them in the 2 Denners close to me (not that I'll be buying that many) but a nice bargain for fillet of beef.

Environmental cost of meat

Of course it is expensive, thats why I smug..., er, bought back five kilos with me last week and nochantly walked down the green lane.

But I think its stupid to deny the environmental impact of meat production.

When it takes around 20'000 litres of water to produce a kilo of beef, not to discount the feedstock production and transportation of all of that from birth to death.

go on, have a groan you Jeremy Clarkson lovers... at least accept that you are part of the problem.

Seriously WTF? I'm asking how much the meat is so that I can compare with my normal prices.

The human race is a parasite on the earth - I get it. I could list 100 reasons why. If the entire population of Switzerland stopped eating meat it would have no impact. Why not go and tell the Chinese to stop burning dirty coal or Al Gore to stop flying his private jet

I've just checked out their web page and they've got Brazilian Black Angus Fillet of Beef advertised on Aktion at 50% discount at Fr 5.49 per 100g. However my Denners have Australian fillet, not seen the Brazilian one. So will be interesting to compare the two. What's the price at your source??

About that much pre-discount, depending upon the source.

Looks like Uruguayan is about 55 a kilo and Australian is 62. However, there's usually a discount on, so the Uruguayan is 50 this week and the Australian 50 next.

Worth noting that this is if you buy the full tenderloin. It's more expensive if you buy pre-portioned. I prefer to buy it like that though, so I can choose how to use it. A tenderloin is 1.7-2kg.

http://www.topcc.ch/sortiment/wochen-hits/ gives you an idea.

I may go and buy me one of the entrecôtes they've got on offer at 34 a kilo. I was just thinking I needed some cheap sirloin to mix into burger meat

Offtopic/ I buy the cheapest beef on sale irrelevant of fat content and then grind it together with bacon usually in a 70:30 ratio. Burgers are usually awesome and you don't need to add bacon afterwards as well /offtopic

Continuing off-topic...

They also have shoulder on offer at 22 a kilo. The internet tells me that it's broadly equivalent to chuck. I think I'll pick that up and do 70:30 entrecôte:shoulder. Works out about 3.50 a quarter pounder.

OK so just been down. The Brazilian is 54.90 per kilo while on aktion, and the Australian is 59.90 per kilo on aktion, though as it's all 25% off , it's about Fr 44 per kilo at the moment. Be interesting to see if they do mark it down to 50% off tomorrow and how long it will take to be snapped up. I'll defo buy a couple at Fr30 per kilo.

Re: Why is meat so expensive in Switzerland? (and so cheap just outside CH)

Meat Eaters,
If you are ever passing through Ibach/Seewen in gods own Kanton SZ, make some time to call in to the Fabrikladen at Felder:

http://www.swisstell.ch/verkauf/fabrikladen/index.HTML

Best quality US, Irish and Australian beef and Lamb at good prices -plus the usual swiss unmarbled, tough, horrible ex milk cull cow.

Good pork veal and offal too, but be prepared to buy larger cuts than available in the high St.

Cold cuts and frozen breads cheese and butter also available

Good weekly offers e.g. last week 1/2 pig butchered and bagged CHF 90. Needless to say we Pigged out!

Best
