What [vinyl] do you play on your?

Decided to warm the old Plattenspieler this afternoon after watching on catchup last night, a programme about classic albums.

So far I have had Rubber Soul by the Beatles, Double Fantasy by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Welcome to the Cruise by Judie Tzuke and now Hotel California by The Eagles. Dire Straits was vetoed, as was Neil Young but I am hopeful we can keep going, and as the light fades and the wine flows we could end up with Dark Side of the Moon.

What vinyl would you, do you play on yours?

Only some weird stuff that I can't buy or download in flac, and my wife's collection of 45s.

Vinyl sucks.

Nothing like a bit of crackle before the first track - my other half only plays vinyl and has several hundred records. His friend has over 3000 LPs!!
I still have loads of old records myself but sadly am not allowed near the turntable

Van Der Graaf Generator, Hawkwind, Al Stewart, Rolling Stones.... stuff from the early seventies mostly.

Sounds like me and my OH. My best mate in the UK took possession of my entire record collection last year, and I'm currently sitting in my OH's Athens apartment surrounded by his hundreds of albums and books, all of which need to go to a good home, but he's resisting the need to do it on this trip.

Re: What [vinyl] do you play on your?

Lots of old Reggae, Ska and Dub and some Funk and Jazz, like Curtis Mayfield, Donald Byrd, Miles Davis and Weather Report, also a bit of Psychedelic rock, Gong and Hawkwind, Zeppelin and Hendrix, if I am in the mood. Well thats what I used to put on, but sadly no turntable anymore, I just have no room for one, whenever I pass by a HiFi store I stop and have a look at them though and dream of one day having a music listening room. All my vinyl (that I haven't given away yet) is still boxed up in the attic.

God my list sounds like I am an old fart. I have got a lot of D&B and Techno Electronica too and more contemporary artists in Digital.

I am not an old fart and love Hawkwind..Led Zep, Hendrix, Miles Davis, oooohhh.

But deep down think that collecting media is useless. Everything is virtually available, why clutter one's life. I get feeds of independent stuff being put out freshly every week and spend too much time on new things and doing music than nostalgia. I am glad threads like these remind me.

Re: What [vinyl] do you play on your?

My record collection, along with the turn table, was scattered to the winds when we made our first move to a different voltage country.

A fair sprinkling of the 60s and 70s greats - and just about every Broadway musical cast album ever made.

Ah, the days of belting out show tunes to an imaginary audience... I can't carry a tune in a bucket, and my two left feet don't dance. But one can dream.

Same. Why must vinyl be so heavy?

I've tried to reconstruct my collection, but LPs, even used ones, are much more expensive than they should be around here. A Moody Blues album with a coffee stain on the cover should not cost more than one franc!

I started to convert them into MP3s ..... until I realized it really wasn't worth the hassle, for the reasons MC mentioned

Jethro Tull, Rainbow and lots of Rush. Some Rush tracks no longer sound right to me without crackle.

We were playing Gong at a friend's birthday last weekend. Hawkwind, 'Chronicles of the Black Sword' reminds me of lying on a beach in Fiji, and at the Athens wedding we attended on Saturday, the groom arrived in a jeep blasting out Zepp's 'Rock & Roll' Now that's how to make an entrance. It gives me faith that a guy in his early 30's has most of the same albums I had at that age.

Can't count how many times I bought Rush '2112' and 'A Farewell to Kings' on different formats, and it took me months to get used to not having to turn 'Houses of the Holy' over to listen to 'Dancing Days' when I got it on cd.

Must have been something in the tea

I loved Chronicles, a real homage to Michael Moorcock, not sure I could associate it with Fiji.
