What is a good laptop under 500 for a teenage girl?

I've been trying to buy a gift for my ex gf for a while. Her bday is in june and I was having hard time figuring out what to buy her (as a farewell gift) and she just called to ask me, she needs my help to buy a laptop under $300.

Now it's all perfect, I'm buying her a laptop but I can only shell out chf500. She is heading for 20 and she wants something light and portable.

Does anyone around her age know where I can get one for ~500?

Wait, you are buying your ex-girlfriend a computer? As a parting ways gift?

*feels like just landed in a completely different planet*

All I got as a parting way gift was my freedom (ok, truth be told, is worht more that 500 chf)

Are you looking to buy something new or second hand? You can get some good deals second hand.

Spend the 500.- on hookers and send her the pics instead.

Why does someone her age need to give you laptop advice? Anyone, any age, can advise on a laptop. And yeah, buying your ex-girlfriend a $500 laptop is just... a bit odd.

Here are some idea, prices in CH are largely similar to the US:

Yeah, it's a parting gift. She was too young to understand the relationship thing (and naturally naive) so we parted ways, that doesn't meant I don't love her. I would rather buy a new one, no sure which brand she would prefer though.

Used thinkpads are very good value/price. You can get top specced x220 with great keyboard, i7, ips, fully pimped up with 16gb ram, some good modern ssd on that budget

Yeah, that would be my choice for me, but she is all about the looks and the size (no pun intended). If I could buy a macbook air for chf500 that would be her ultimate choice, but she is asking for my advice to buy a laptop b/c she can't afford the macbook.

Something flashy and not total crappy laptop would be nice, she won't do much with it except see some movies, youtube and facebook

You can get a used macbook air for about that price. Not top specs of course, you'll pay the apple tax. Should be still good enough to watch HD movies.

Maybe look at xiaomi air if you want some similar flashy apple lookalike, but new and for a low price. $559 on banggood + swiss taxes

I second the thinkpad idea - after all Lenovo markets their E series as being stylish!

What exactly is the going rate for a hooker?

(That way the OP will know what to ask/expect in return)

I doubt prices have changed too much in the last 2 months since you went to one.

How old are you, OP?

Young? Who else would even mention that she is a teen, jaysus. They know more about technology than anyone, btw. Or - maybe you think she should have something with some schmuck glued on it, maybe...glitter? Neon pink case?

I have been buying stuff like (arduino) from bandgood for a long time, I think this might work. I will checkout xiaomi reviews on youtube before deciding though

The OP is obviously older than his ex, I'm guessing late 20s/early 30s; maybe35. Setting "why should his age be any issue here?" aside, he mentioned his ex's age because it's an important purchasing parameter—as he said, looks and size are more important than performance.

And guys who point out that their girlfriends are sub-20 (I'm not saying that the OP makes a habit of this!) tend to be older, not younger.

OP, I second the Xiaomi suggestion. By far the best of the Chinese options (and don't forget that Apple manufactures extensively there).

Thanks for your post. I love it.

We have actually few days of a 10-year difference, which was and is too vast (in my personal opinion). Sadly you never know unless you both get bored one day and have nothing to talk about or have very different goals and desires. I'm glad it ended on good terms and I like her since she is unique and a good person.
I am interested in someone else now, who is around my age and we seem to have similar interests.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll take a serious look at the Xiaomi. She'll love it!

With the above version in mind it is is even stranger that you are buying her a 500chf laptop. If you want her to move on (and you, now that you like someone else) then why would you want her owning a laptop that makes her think of you every time she looks at it? You must really want a fresh start.
