Re: Help!! Noise from upstairs.....:(((

I had a great neighbour once.

It sounded like she was dragging dead bodies around in the dead of night. It wasn't just me that noticed it, friends that were staying did too.

She and I became friends over the years. I mentioned it once, she swears she must have been practising her belly dancing!!

Re: Help!! Noise from upstairs.....:(((

Seriously just for a second or two, I know how frustrating it can be to be disturbed in the night. Noise which recurs regularly, especially when you don't know what it is, or where it is coming from, can indeed be infuriating.

One aspect of the problem is that noise seldom annoys those that are making it. In the night everything sounds much louder than it does in the daytime as there is no 'competition' from noise outside, or the racket one makes onself.

A guy was working in his basement office here at 11 p.m. one night. Two of us, even sleeping on different floors, were woken by him using the hole punch and the stapler! No-one else heard a thing. But we were the ones with young children and we always slept with one ear open for trouble. Noise in the night is usually bad news! The poor fellow had no idea at all that he might be disturbing anyone. These days, without small children, I probably wouldn't hear him either.

Normal walking around and suchlike have to be accepted as normal, so it would be important to differentiate between things which are irritating to you, and things which shouldn't be happening. Rather than say the people upstairs are making a din, I would note the time and ask them the next day if they heard it too.

There are a few tips on here on how to reduce the problem a bit. I wish you luck but it isn't always easy to sort these things out.

Re: Help!! Noise from upstairs.....:(((

There is a hobby room under our bedroom.

One person who was renting it was using an electric chain saw.

The next person hung a boxing bag from the ceiling and regularly used it.

And the next was our neighbours who thought ( wrongly ) that their children could do their partying there.
In all these three cases we got it stopped ( one way or the other ).

Re: Help!! Noise from upstairs.....:(((

Had a slight problem with neighbour under us years ago, advised almost as soon as moved in.

Our kitchen was above their bedroom, so chairs disturbed. Easy solution moved them out and had our own little rules about not washing up after 9pm or making other noises in that room late at night. We tried to keep out of it late at night or tippie toe if we had reason to go into it.

Neighbour almost in tears when we moved out.

Well done, moggy. Considerate neighbour!

Tennis-balls as "socks" on chairs can make a huge difference, especially for the neighbours below.

Re: Help!! Noise from upstairs.....:(((

Felt pads do the same, are cheap and they come in all shapes and forms.

Our upstairs appt seems to be jinxed. All our three upstairs neighbors had marital or extra-marital trouble, doors banging, running after one another, shouting, lamps exploding on the floor, falling heavily because of to much drink and substances. And we live in the posh Seefeld neighborhood ;-)

I sleep like a stone. I once slept soundly through a heavy metal concert and woke up when it ended. But my husband is more sensitive, so we moved the bedroom to the office and it is better now.

We talked to our neighbors who were not aware of the noise they made. It hasn't stopped altogether, but they try. One of them wouldn't change his ways - drug trafficking and ordering prostitutes with high heels around three in the morning, waking us because they mistakenly always pushed our bell - and we told him we would talk to the landlord. He didn't stop but the landlord apparently told him he would be expelled if he heard more complaints.

That fixed it. It is not a quiet neighborhood and in the summer, there is noise from the Restaurants and from the balconies at night.

When you live in a old neighborhood with old buildings you have to accept it. But it is also very nice to have all the shops in walking distance and the lake is close and after all, our neighbors are generally really pleasant and we all talk openly if something is bothering someone.

How about not building blocks where kitchens are above bedrooms?! Or not moving into such blocks...

We live in a society filled with other people that we have to tolerate. If complete silence and privacy is important to you, DO NOT RENT. If you donít like to be touched, DO NOT RIDE THE BUS. Fork up the cash to live completely comfortably, or donít bitch when other people irritate you. Thatís life.

But even owner-occupiers like us have to put up with noise from neighbours if they have chosen to purchase in a block. We have some quiet neighbours and a couple that make more noise. Thankfully no children and mostly older people. We are fortunate that the guy who lives directly above us lives alone, works during the day and is frequently away.

Perhaps living on the top floor eliminates the problem of noise from above, but you will surely hear noise from underneath or from adjacent flats still, not to mention from outside.

So your advice 'do not rent' could be extended to 'do even not live in apartment blocks'.

Or even: Do not live in a single family home in a typical Swiss neighborhood.

Bottom line, Switzerland is a crowded place. Infrastructure design means most of us must live on top of one another. There is less personal space, less privacy than many of us are used to. Living as most of us must, in small spaces cheek-to-jowl, means we have less personal freedom, our homes are definitely not our castles.

It also means that we should consider others to a greater extent that we have to in other places. How does my behavior affect my neighbors? Even more importantly as we start to get irritated, how would I feel if my neighbors were to complain about me as I am considering complaining about them?

Living in fishbowls, as most of us must here, means give and take. If we wish to live a 'normal' life, we must expect that others are able to do so as well.

/soapbox mode.

You are totally right about NYC. That's maybe why many Swiss go there, it feels so at home. At least to me.

Re: Help!! Noise from upstairs.....:(((

I'd suggest you just speak to them. They might not be aware of the noise they make (maybe the neighbour below you thinks the same about you...).

Next step would be to speak to the landlord.

I really wonder about those people who have to call the police about noise complaints, instead of speaking to the neighbours directly. I thought that's only what the Swiss do...

That's lovely... like our friends mayen in Valais. Just don't slice your hand with a knife cutting trees down, find out your phone battery is dead & the solar panel hasn't charged. Or turn up soaking wet in a storm thinking there's always food in the storage cabinet... we had rosti for breakfast .
Sleep well.

Re: Help!! Noise from upstairs.....:(((

It is amusing when people complain about not having enough personal space here or neighbors with any regards for them..try living in a giant housing estate of 300 000-400 000 people. The fun part is, people put up with it, are quiet and respectful. Those who aren't pay a fine or end up with being evicted by simple legislature. Switzerland is not so tiny and there is plenty of personal space. Some people are smarter/more considerate with it than others, I guess.

We are 200m from the main cantonal road as well!

And we have 2x 2kW generators, plus a 95Ah battery.

And, as I mentioned, 4.5km from home. Walking distance.

Tom

P.S. I cut trees with the chain-saw, not with a knife!
