Australia or Switzerland a better place to live?

Hey everyone, new to this forum but not Switzerland. I have lived in Switzerland previously and sometimes I still find myself missing it. Have been thinking of moving back there but its a tough decision as both countries are great places to live and have a high standard of living.

The thing I miss most about Switzerland is the natural beauty. I loved the mountains, the snow, the lakes etc. It was also great being in the middle of Europe so travel was easy. In Australia it takes ages just to fly out of the country.

However Australia has some awesome beaches, and the people are a lot friendlier, open minded, and easy going. It is a lot easier to make friends in Australia than it is in Switzerland.

Which country do you think is a better place to live?

What's wrong with Australians? I do find them to be friendlier and more welcoming than the Swiss.

At the risk of upsetting anyone, anywhere : we have lived for considerable periods in both countries. Loved CH despite that there are drawbacks as with everywhere.
Very, very unhappy in Oz, resulting in illness : we found the people there not - shall we say - very up-to-date with what is happening in the world. Very difficult to talk about Mozart, Rubens, Mendelssohn, Chagall - "wah?" [not even who] so we opted to return to Europe and have felt wonderful ever since.
But this is just our personal opinion, and would not suit everyone of course.

Outside of the big cities the Australians are few and far between. No issue. But almost everything else is trying to kill you.

Re: Australia or Switzerland a better place to live?

We had the same question 4 months ago.
It seems what Australia does to people is make them indecisive, weak, dependent and trying for their enviroment.

Better stay in Australia, in Switzerland you have to take decisions daily all by yourself, starts with what to have for breakfast ..... take the train or the car ..... all the way to "do I still want atomic power plants?"

Re: Australia or Switzerland a better place to live?

OP - maybe visit CH again for a while before making any massive life decisions. The things you list as loving about Australia seem to be pretty big pros to me.

Good luck.

Stay in Australia!!! In switzerland resources are artificially scarce! e.g water, housing, food.
and the human rights are disregarded!

I think you'll find this question comes up often because Switzerland and Australia are two of the wealthiest countries in the world with a high standard of living. I read that Australia and Switzerland are rated the two best countries in the world to be born in.

I choose a temperate climate for my vacations. Others enjoy the heat.

It's really a question of weighing-up everything. Don't know Australia or many Australians, but once met a good 'un.

Australia's a huge country and has several climatic zones, ranging from tropical and sub-tropical in the north to temperate in places like Sydney and Melbourne. In fact, Melbourne's climate is very like southern England's. It wouldn't be difficult to find somewhere temperate for your vacation!

Re: Australia or Switzerland a better place to live?

I would pick Germany out of these two.

Restaurants are dirt cheap.

But if i had to pick only one of these i'd go with Australia.

Food is cheaper, rents are OK and girls are the bomb.

I can not think of a single advantage of CH over Australia.

Maybe low tax rates if you are planning to start a company, only this.

Yes, we know you think everywhere else is better than here Aresid/Thomaz. For no logical or realistic reasons but we have heard it too many times.....

Australia or Switzerland a better place to live?

Australia.

I returned to Australia, to Cairns Tropical North Queensland a few months ago. It was the best decision . I spend the whole day outside walking along the esplanade, swimming in the lagoon a 4800sq m salt water swimming facility. There are free electric BBQ's and picnic areas for use right along the Esplanade foreshore. Free fitness and exercise equipment. I joined the free Tai Chi and Boxfit classes in the morning.
Everyone is outside in the evening, a lot of entertainment (buskers), the Night Market and many restaurants. I do my shopping in the farmers market instead of Migros/Coop.
The beaches north of Cairns up to Port Douglas are beautiful and so is the "Hinterland". Sailing and snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef or visiting the Rainforest is amazing.
I will visit Switzerland/Europe once/twice a year in the future. I had a good job, some friends but now I am retired and like to enjoy life in the sun.

Plenty of opinions to read from the time when there were more contributors on EF. It seems someone will pose this existential question every two years or so.
Enjoy.

Re: Australia or Switzerland a better place to live?

My husband and I grew up in Malaysia. We moved to Australia some 30+ years ago and have been in Switzerland for almost 5 years. We are moving back to Melbourne for medical reasons but would have been happy to live here for a few more years.

Both countries have their good and bad. My take on a few good things - Australia has its wild inland beauty, diverse ethnicity and culture, its friendly people and the beautiful beaches. Switzerland has order, tradespeople who turn up at the promised time, all Swiss strives to do what's proper. At the same time, there are negatives in both countries. It all boils down to what you make of it. Both are great countries. A hard one.....
