Re: Anyone got a half decent motorhome / caravan they would 'lend' me?

Not much help, but the US is where to get this bug out of your system. Cheap rentals, bigger/more comfortable vehicles, large highways and cheap petrol are all on your side.

Drive one the "wrong" direction at the end of the season and you will likely find your rental is free. www.cruiseamerica.com is where to visit.

Just checked -- if you're prepared to drive from Arizona to Virginia, you can get 9 nights in a full-sized RV for $24/day. Not bad.

Alright, 2nd attempt: http://www.carawero.ch/wohnmobile-preise.cfm (no mileage limit for a rental period longer than 8 days)
3rd option if 2nd one falls through: http://www.bantam.ch/#tab7 (no mileage limitation)

4th option if 3rd on falls through: http://www.ruchti.ch/?nodeId=90009&v...roductId=29049 (no mileage limitation)

we have tried a few companies, but high season and all the 'hidden' costs mean a weeks rental quickly becomes 3k chf (ok some of that is deposit which is held onto for a few weeks after), once you add diesel, camping fee's etc etc it becomes a totally unrealistic option, can rent a centrally located villa in Italy for a fraction of that.

It appears the rental market over here is a more "try before you buy" type set up. Either encouraging the deluded that buying is cheaper than renting in the long run - or encouraging the deluded to abandon crapping in a bucket for a holiday in civilization.

Surely it you and the BB2 family could jet off to Benidorm for 2 weeks for under 1,000chf per person.

we could, but the dogs can't, as one of them is recently rescued and spent most of his life in kennels the last thing we want to do is put him back in kennels for a week or two

That's not really the point is it.

People don't just camp or motor home because they can't afford anything else.
It's an experience.

The place we like staying on Lago di Como (top end) has no availability before the last week of September. My guess is that this is what you'll be battling.

Have you tried James Villa, VillaPlus and other such sites/companies?

Yes, 4 people and a couple of dogs in an aluminum tube, in the rain (or a heat wave), away from home and where a foreign language is spoken is an excellent way to figure out who really loves whom.

Do you need the van to be already properly fitted as a travel van, or would you feel comfortable just throwing a couple of mattresses in the back?

This is not unlimited mileage, but at least the rates are very clear:

I already own a 1972 vw camper van, was fine when I was 17 but wouldn't want to sleep in it now, or drive it any distance especially in a hot climate
