This forum seems to lately be full of old fogies, busy-bodies and bores telling people how to live their lives.

It's getting like an on-line version of a sitting rooms in one of those retirement home where the armchairs all have a faint smell of urine and tea (I can only imagine).

Please stop it now and get back to your Suduko or TV watching.

Thanks!
Please can you kindly write a little slower - and louder??

Re: Old fogies on this forum.

Well, to be fair, people usually come here to ask for advice. Unfortunately, some posters take this opportunity to reply in a trolling style for entertainment or self-gratification purposes. Some of these posters have been on EF longer than me and some have joined only recently. These posters also tend to be male.

Wow, how old are you? In order for most of those to apply (apart from health insurance in the us) you must be pushing close to 100
Speed limits were introduced here in the early '70s, mandatory health insurance in 1997, drinking age about 15 years ago.

You remember introduction of the speed-limits as a driver? Why are you not on pension yet?
Actually you must have looked that up ..... you only came here in the 80-ies. At least that's what you said once.

UK had no speed limits on motorways in 1961, the M! was used for speed testing cars by manufactures in the early hours of the morning

No, I knew it.

When I first came here, the speed limits were 100/130, and 80/120 when I moved here four years later.

Re: Old fogies on this forum.

I wrote "Old fogies" and not "old people."

I thought it was rude to name people but I would never consider LongBYT or Odile, or Meloncollie and many others in the former category.

But there have been a few threads recently where a few older members of the forum have been a bit off in their responses to newcomers and others.

No, that's the opposite. I'm telling people how I want to live mine.

They can do what the hell they want.

Norman Dewis, Jaguar test driver, is on record saying that they used the M1 for testing in the early hours of the morning. Can't find it online, but he writes about it in his biography.

You are not a fogie yet assume everybody must retire. The entire country. Same age.

I don't think assumptions or self-righteousness are limited to some age. But moralizing or acting upon them, feeling free to dish (not knowing how to take it...the horrors) might be.

As per OP's issue - if somebody is letting others know he thinks the population is killing themselves on cigs and poor nutrition, he is totally entitled to do so and we don't have to react. As long as it is not personal, people can share their opinions.

If noobs are attacked after their 1st post - "no, you won't get your permit, you naieve bumpkin" "nor a job" "what were you thinking" and everybody solicits quite sensitive private info of them immediately, under the pretext of "helping them", in an uncooth interrogative way, then Houston, we got a problem. Especially if that advice is often factually incorrect. Let people ask what they need to ask first. We also have enough deterring stories here, of uninformed newcomers and consequences for folks to wade through. There is a risk, people coming here mostly know it, adventurous souls. We might have forgotten here that taking a risk is part of life.

I know that the community help in a right time/form/discretion is really appreciated and I think this community is amazingly helpful, smart and mostly kind. Just should be a little funnier sometimes..not turning it into a "bureau of internet help and turning noobs off". And yes, it is true that it needs to be positive and de-self-centric also on the noob's side, you give - > you get.

Pop along to the hearing aid shop luv. The nice young fellow in there is so sweet and helped me to choose the right ones. And if you ever break bits off the young lady at the counter will put them back together again. I got mine readjusted so that now I can hear what people are saying about me behind my back.

I've a few of my old ones going spare.... if there's a need, after all even the young complaining anklebiters will grow old in time

Re: Old fogies on this forum.

It seems some kind of age discrimination because there's nothing to justify that the " negativity you listed" are solely emanating from old fogies.
Sure, it exists, but seems we are all equally capable (and doing) these type of negativity.

Take the young student, he's also saying "How to live your life". The one who's probably capable of drinking his own pee because it's recycling an expensive beer in Zurich (which is surely cheaper in Berlin).

So yes, some old fogies are...well...say that some posts would smell of urine, if they could. But it's nothing exceptional and they are not the only one.

So maybe best to point finger at the root cause and not at one of the many perpetrators.

Amen.

Quite agree - though the three posters/trolls that annoy me the most are women (I think...).
