They are just doing their job within the guidelines set to them and any leniency is actually a big deal. We live in Switzerland which is the land of rules and obedience to those rules....it's what makes the country tick and if we don't like it then we have two choices: suck it up or move on out.
That would only make any sense if all of the rules were consistently and without hesitation applied, even in the most marginal of scenarios as the OP.

Thankfully, they aren't applied black and white in all scenarios, and there are some sensible human beings within such administrative and enforcement positions who do have some reason and empathy which they sometimes do apply in situations such as the OP.

"Suck it up or move away" is kindergarten logic, because it suggests there is always nothing in-between. Experience tells me otherwise.

Yes, the OP had an invalid ticket. Yes, any controller could within their rights fine her... but they could also choose to see that it is 10 fricken cents and an obvious error and let her pay the 10c difference instead of issuing a grossly disproportionate 100chf fine. I have seen staff exercise that kind of judgement for the better multiple times in my 8 years in CH.

Re: Got fined 100 chf for a ten cents mistake

I've been personally pardoned when I forgot to renew my abonnement card (I just need to ride 1 stop, but this doesn't matter). I've seen a person being taken in shackles for having invalid ticket & ID (but this was in swiss train between cities).

10 cents or 10 million CHF doesn't matter, it's about riding illegally at that moment. Many people come up with incredible stories when caught (or start yelling insults), I presume they've heard all of those wonderful excuses at some point. For this case (having ticket to few previous stops but not this one) 100 chuffs seems on high side, something smaller would be probably more appropriate.

But then again I've seen a person fined in GVA for cutting 2m of road to pedestrian crossing (with green light) and he got almost 1000 CHF cumulative fine, which is much further on ridiculous side.

How do you know why he was arrested?

Well I think you should have been put in handcuffs and put in jail like they do in Gringo land.

I was on the train a few weeks ago going to Locarno from Zürich. I had made a mistake with the online booking so that the ticket was already expired when I was checked. I told him I made a mistake with the date of the booking. He could have fined me 120CHF but naturally he saw that I was an honest person and looked the other way. Thanks SBB!

Ok, EF let me keep up with the tradition of this site and rant a bit, like wise you can start hating without any reason. This post is for the nice EF'ers.

So, yesterday my monthly Aigle-Lausanne abonnement finished, so today I had to go to work paying ~10 francs. I work at the EPFL, and when I left my job I wanted to buy only one train faire called "Grand Lausanne" from the EPFL to lausanne flon so I can renew my card.

Now, here is the thing, if you have a half fare card (demi tarif) you can pay chf 2.40 for 1 hour bus/train ride around lausanne. This is the card I wanted to buy but trying to hurry up not to miss the train I bough a short trip ticket which is valid for only 3 stops and this one costs chf 2.30 exactly 10 cents less than the one which allows you to go for one hour.

Now after taking the train on the 5th stop the controllers got it and checked my ticket and said it was not valid, I tried to apologize for my mistake, I even had changes in my pocket worth 5 francs which I showed them so they would not think I was trying to save the 10 cents.

But in the end no amount of explaining was enough for them and I got fined chf100 or maybe 140chf because of 10 cents.

I realize it was my mistake, but I just want to know ... if you were the controller would you fine me too?

Sometimes the rule of the ticket itself is not explained very well so that it could be very confusing for foreigners.

Re: Got fined 100 chf for a ten cents mistake

It could be worst, I was once fined for going two stops further than on my ticket though the ticket price was the same. Just a friend called me whilst I was in the train so I decided to travel a little further and I was not afraid as I knew there was no difference in the price... well, it was not in Switzerland.

Don't you think there might have been some other kind of reason in addition to fare dodging, though? It sounds more plausable that they would slap cuffs on him if he was pissed or drugged up or a combination of the three. He could have been wanted by the police and they'd been alerted as to which train he was on. It's unlikely the heavy-handed treatment was because of a fare dodge.

Re: Got fined 100 chf for a ten cents mistake

Wondering how frequent controls and fines are -- I am thinking of riding a bicycle in Zurich, and I do not know all the rules , and even if I did, I sometimes just don't focus as well as one probably should.

Is there a substantial risk of getting fined, or honked at or badgered etc?

Just observe the rules of the road and use your common sense.

You can be fined for stuff like riding on the pavement and running through red lights, being drunk, poorly lit, pretty much the same as in any country.

If you 'can't focus' though, you might be best leaving the bike at home.

Commuter who missed his stop by seconds threatened with £1,000 fine.

A commuter has spoken out after he was threatened with court action and a £1,000 fine after he fell asleep and missed his stop.

He coughed up an initial £19.10, but lodged an appeal which he was told was unsuccessful and was ordered to pay another £21.80.

The company’s rules state anyone with outstanding fines could face prosecution or be fined a further £1,000.

He said: “I understand there are rules but surely there has got to be some common sense?”

Train operator Southeastern only relented on the fine when Mr Armstrong complained to his local newspaper.

A spokesman for the train company said: “The appeal is being re-logged and a refund of £19.10 will be processed as soon as possible.

“A member of the IPFAS team will be in touch with Mr Armstrong in due course.”

Learn the theory material for the car drivers test. No need to take the test if you don't want to.

Honestly, I have trouble understanding why foreigners don't do that of their own volition. I wouldn't wish it on you but too many people die in traffic each year as is already, that's exactly the reason children are taught at school how to act and behave in traffic. The costs of perhaps 50CHF, if even that, for the theory material will pay for itself in no time. And the peace of mind ... Well you get my drift.

Common sense requires some footing to extrapolate from, sound experience. Wat (no offense) may lack just that.

Re: Got fined 100 chf for a ten cents mistake

Well I was travelling from Zürich to Locarno. Booked online but when I went the next day the ticket was already expired. I made a mistake with the date. I told him what had happened and of course he was kind and understanding and turned a blind eye. Of course the 20 Franks that I slipped him helped!
