Can a man and a woman be just friends?

This is a vexing question that I have yet to find a satisfactory answer to. Can a woman and a man be "just friends"? I have been in all sorts of situations where I thought "yes"... then "No"... Does the sexual chemistry always get in the way? Or is it OK to be friends with a member of the opposite sex, knowing there is an attraction, but just not acting on it? Mutual chemistry makes for very interesting conversation.

Why would you want to be just friends if there is mutual attraction and chemistry?

Because anticipation is often better than reality. Oh, and I'm married.

Lots of guys have trouble being friends with their wife.

Seriously though. If you're happily married, and you're not hiding anything from either woman, why would it be a problem?

If you're not happily married, then do something about that before you start making extra terrestrial contact.

Re: Can a man and a woman be just friends?

You ever heard of "the friend zone"? Largely populated by young males who have a desperate crush on their female 'friend', who in turn is either blissfully unaware of or shamelessly exploiting the fact.

It doesn't have to be that way, of course, but many/most guys in platonic friendships with women would always at least vaguely consider the possibility of it spilling over into something more, even if they absolutely definitely would not do anything on that front. It's hardwired into the brain

In order to answer this question, we'd need to throw in to the equation

"Can a woman and a woman just be friends"

Yes. I think it's called restraint.

And both parties need to practice it. Very difficult to make it work if one party is pining for the other without end.

I've a number of male friends and am still friends with several of my ex-boyfriends. It largely depends on the individuals involved, and their commitment to make the friendship work.

Sometimes the "but can't we at least be friends" is a way to hang on to hope for more at some point in the future.

Re: Can a man and a woman be just friends?

I'm thinking more along the lines of "yes, I'm attracted to you, and obviously you are attracted to me, but we both know we can't act on that due to our personal situations, so let's just have lunch and enjoy each other's company" kinda thing.

Is it OK to just enjoy the company of an attractive person, but just leave it as that? Nothing more required?

Where did it get you last time you tried? My advice from back then still stands.

Er... it may be the real ale talking but are you, dear OP, actually seeking some sort of collective "go for it, son" response?

No, other than to take into account the natural consequences of a quick screw.

If you're already thinking along these lines, then you already need to take this thinking into your calculation.
