Refund on customs duty if returning item from abroad?

I purchased an item from a UK online shop and when it was delivered I paid service+duty to have it received like per usual. The item unfortunately does not fit and I will return it via post.

I'm wondering if it's possible to somehow get the customs duty I paid refunded? Obviously not the service charge. I'm guessing no, but worth asking as I'm curious.

Cheers

Contact the company directly and most credit your card back again. It happened to me with some sports gear and the company credited all the costs including duties and postage so I was zero out of pocket.

If it's a crappy small company or an individual seller you might have a more elaborate procedure but if it's a big retailer it should be no problem.

Thanks for the reply but why would the company refund the customs duty? it was the CH Post that I had to pay therefore the company didn't receive any additional funds. In fact they took off the UK VAT.

Thanks for the link - the page says to fill out form 18.86 but the form doesn't have anything to complete? looks like a complete admin overhead...and they charge 5% for it.

I had the same situation recently. Firstly the charge will be broken into two sections: 1. Administration and 2. the actual duty itself. The charges you cannot get refunded and if you want to get the duties refunded there is a CHF30 admin charge, so if the duties are there or thereabout, it may not be worth it. (Wasn't for me, anyway) You may have more luck with companies that do all this as part of the price, but I had to pay DHL for these services, so I was out of luck.

Presumably it was a goodwill gesture. I sent them the documents accompanying the package which listed all the charges as well as the receipt for the return tracked postage and they refunded everything. It was their mistake - they must have screwed up in the warehouse and sent me someone else's order.

The company was Wiggle.co.uk. Their customer service is very responsive.

In such case i can see it as good service to pay up for all costs that were made due to the companies error, the question of TS i did interpret as something where they delivered what was asked for and customer wants to send back.

Makes sense if the item was sent in error or the item was faulty. however in this instance the item is simply no longer wanted so doesn't make sense for the retailer to refund.
