Proper cinema in Zurich?

Hey all,

I don't mean this to sound snobby, but seriously is there a proper cinema somewhere in Zurich? I've been to Sihlcity and several Kitag locations and haven't found one yet.

First of all, what is up with the break in the middle? Are people unable to hold their pee for 2 hours? The break ruins the pacing and suspense. Or even worse when they break it in the middle of a dialogue. This is by far the biggest annoyance - if nothing else, is there at least a place that doesn't do this?

Second, the snacks suck. I haven't found a place that does proper fresh popcorn. I see them bring in huge plastic bags full of premade one. It is cold and squeaky. I don't understand how people can eat it. Don't even get me started on the nachos dips...

And lastly - drinks just come in bottles. No place I've been to had fountain drinks. A 0.5L bottle goes real great with the huge pile of oversalted popcorn... This actually brings me back to my first question - I understand when people buy 1.5L drinks and then have to run to pee in the middle, but really? From a tiny bottle?

I gave it a few shots, tried a few places but unless there is a proper cinema somewhere around here I'll just stick to Netflix and watch the big movies in different country...

Re: Proper cinema in Zurich?

Different places, different customs. Proper is as proper does. Yes, movie-goiong is a different experience here than at home, but hey - Viva la difference, enjoy the experience.

The intermission is a hold over from the times of reel changing. I've come to like it, a chance to chat with others about the film and have a glass of wine.

Speaking of which - who needs popcorn and soda when the theater stocks a decent burgundy?

Re: Proper cinema in Zurich?

Why do I have a feeling that someone is actually missing the likes of AMC and Regal :P While I dont think it qualifies as 'proper cinema', but I quite enjoyed the Allianz Openair kino experience at Zurichhorn. It makes for a perfect date night - choice of restaurants, a bar, awsome view of the lake unlimited Ben&Jerrys and no break in between. On the flipside, its only in summer, you might have probably seen most of the movies they are showing and I dont remember seeing any popcorn. Just throwing it out there as maybe a one time alternative to netflix on a good weather day..

Re: Proper cinema in Zurich?

Try Arthouse or Riffraff. https://www.arthouse.ch/ or https://www.riffraff.ch/ and https://www.kinohoudini.ch/

Arthouse only has a "break" at Le Paris, Riffraff or Houdini don't have any. Riffraff has a bar and you can buy a glass of wine and take it with you. There is no popocorn there tough

Funny that. In Basel we prefer to go to Capitol over Pathe, specifically because it does have a break. Each to their own.

Re: Proper cinema in Zurich?

Welcome to the forum. Nice to start off with a complaint.

You're in a different country so honestly why should things be the same as back in the States? That isn't where you are now. Either embrace the differences or as Today Only said, think about going home - because eventually you'll end up being very unhappy here if you can't accept change/differences from what you're used to.

Re: Proper cinema in Zurich?

This needs to be moved to first-world problems.

I mean I'm sure the lovely AMC 9$ combo of 1.5-l coke and bucket of popcorn soaked in butter that could feed a family of four, is much, much better...

Not all cinemas have breaks either. That being said, I quite like the break. Gives me time to get more of those awful snacks

Re: Proper cinema in Zurich?

If you are annoyed by a break in the middle, nothing bothers me more than the army of hamsters munching loudly on popcorn while watching a film. Can't they last two hours without stuffing themselves? The final straw: the slurping noise when they've realised with horror that their massive "Diet" Coke is down to the last drop!

That's why in Geneva I always go to the "Bio-Cinema" in Carouge, great little art house cinema with a very decent selection of wine and beer and a well-behaved bunch of patrons.

I'm not sure about for Zurich, but in Bern there is a Pathé at Westside that shows movies without any interruption. Maybe look into Pathé's in Zürich.

I'm quite sure he will then complain the selection of English/non-translated movies at the Pathés is too limited

Going to the pictures when you've got a telly at home is like catching the bus when you own a plane.

Why put yourself through all that discomfort?

Some people do like to go out and socialise...apparently! Mind you, they tend to be Glocals.

I love the break in the middle, makes watching a movie on the big screen much more comfortable when you can have a midway toilet break and grab an ice cream. It's not as though you don't watch a movie at home and pause it while you grab more drinks or food, is it?

You may as well ask "Why read a book when you can watch the film?"

Watching a film in a cinema is a very different experience from watching it on TV (for most people). Especially living in an apartment, where you spend most of the time changing the volume to cope with inaudible dialog and stupidly loud music and sound effects (what's that about?)

Most modern speaker systems have a setting for "late-night/apartment" watching where the volume of speech is increased and the music/effects volume is decreased.

Regarding the breaks - I went to a great cinema in Bombay once where, during the interval, we were served cups of tea with china cups and saucers. Very civilised!

Re: Proper cinema in Zurich?

This is not another winge about how things are done differently here. Too many of those who have gone native feel that this is an affront to their new-found identity.

Fact is, the Swiss are not a cinema-going nation like others are. I come from South Africa where cinemas are second to none, huge, plush, state of the art, honed for the cinema experience. On top of that most people know how to behave in a cinema.

I have more or less stopped going to the movies here. The sound is usually badly mixed, the focus puller seems to be out having his ciggie because s/he can't wait for the raucherpause, the mobile phones come out, the talking starts etc...

Intermission here is a smoke break.

It's perfectly OK to not be from here, live here and still think WTF is up with cinemas here. Offering WTF critique on cinema culture is not waging war on the host country or culture.

So to all those 'go home', groany types, relax, it's just a WTF is up with *whatever*. It's hardly corroding things from the inside.

By the way, WTF is up with cinema in this country and the silly smoke break?

Do you realize that cinema owners need to make a profit and that they are under tremendous pressure to survive as a result of all the other outlets such as Netflix etc?
- The break: opportunity to sell you more stuff
- Pre-make pop corn etc.. 'cost they can't make a profit on it otherwise

Thirty years ago when I was a student in Dublin, you'd see queues outside the five big cinemas in the afternoon for evening tickets and Thursday night was cinema night for all, it was the done thing. Today they are all gone! In fact if there are 20 cinemas left in the country I'd be surprised.

Twenty years ago, we used to have 2 cinemas in the town I live in here in Switzerland and today have none.

Enjoy it while you can...
