Law. 1 room apartment for 2 persons

Is it available for 2 persons (a couple) to rent a 1 or 1.5 room apartment? One landlord told me that it is against the law, but I can't imagine it in my mind.

Re: Law. 1 room apartment for 2 persons

It should not generally be an issue. How large was the flat?

Re: Law. 1 room apartment for 2 persons

The landlord is free to rent to whomever he wants. So it is more his "law" and you can not change it in any way if he says max. occupancy is one.

Actually, if you are a female person you can change it. Childern born after singing the contract are o.k.

Re: Law. 1 room apartment for 2 persons

There isn't a Swiss law covering this, but maybe Zurich has a local law.

Zurich's own rental properties do have this rule:

Quote:
The following guidelines apply:
Number of guests = minimum number of rooms - 1
Although that's even more restrictive - I'm pretty sure you'd be allowed two people in a one bedroom (2 room) flat, the room count must be a bit odd.

It may be for foreigners, but Swiss can rent anything they want.

If you read the actual regulation this is not a max. but min. occupancy guideline for city owned property:
https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/content...Vermietung.pdf

Means 3 room apartement should normally not be rented to a single person.

Re: Law. 1 room apartment for 2 persons

There is no law that prohibits two persons to live in a 1 room apartment.

- Not in Zürich.
- Not in Switzerland.
- Not for Foreigners.

Signed by a foreigner who at start lived with his wife in a 1 room apartment for a year in centre of Zürich and everything legally fine.

Though of course it does go on and contributes to the housing shortage.

Private individuals can do what they want. In the end Switzerland is still a libertarian country, even when the FDP has only two federal council members. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libertarianism
