Italian / Mediterranean style noodles are for the most part and traditionally made from durum wheat.
Only if no eggs are involved, which is mainly done to save money, and is difficult to do at home without special equipment.

Egg noodles use soft wheat flour, which is what people make at home.

Made from rice, not wheat.

Tom
Some were made from rice. Others from wheat. According to some research, the wheat noodles apparently came first.

I assumed the apples were stored whole and made into puree as and when needed.
Depends on the type, these for instance ripen very late (early-mid October IIRC) and are good until Easter-Pentecost. Store in the cellar in wooden crates, in the dark and with cool stable temperatures. They're edible but nothing good until after 2-3-4 months in the cellar.

Re: Is the Mohrenkopf a racist piece of candy?

Hi everyone,

I havent been on EF for a while now...... work, studying, trying to grow my business.....
though this morning, I had an inkling that this post would have been revived. Since 25. May, many people have been mourning George Floyd's death. Many, including me feel sick when we remember that video, my heart cries, cries for every person who has been subjected to racially motivated harm.
And I have my history too, growing up in Apartheid South Africa, has left its scars. Back home, I was an activist from the age of 14, I have seen my share of police dogs and tear gas.
I know I am not alone, when I say that as a child, I often wondered, why was I born brown/black, so many things that are not good are associated with brown, dirt, feces, fear. imagine my sadness, when my 10 year old told me that the neighbors boys said to her 'You are brown because you have shit smeared on your face'.

Sadly, I realised, that my silence, when fellow peers make racist comments, has aided to the conception that their views are acceptable.

with reference to the Schoko Kuss, I had another talk with another friend, who feels that it was called Mohrenkopf since forever, why cant we just leave it alone. Should we, leave it alone? Should we just shrug our shoulders, and let it be? Am I a Mohrekopf? I have the physical attributes (once my head is shaven) Is it ok, to reduce me to a piece of candy? Am I being oversensitive? Do I have the right to be oversensitive?

We are coming out of decades of people of colour been depicted as poor, lazy, criminals, violent, stupid. Do we have reduce us to a chocolate covered marshmallow as well?

Ending racism, is ending the way people of colour are depicted, and perceived in my view.
Peace to you all

Can we start addressing this by actually making fun of the people who are racist? Can we start depicting them as "poor, lazy, criminals, violent, stupid"? Which btw, is probably true for most of them anyway? It's despicable we're even debating this in the 21st century.

I can't even begin to imagine what you have been through in your life, especially in apartheid SA and how horrific that must have been. All I can say is that in my eyes there should be no difference between how people of all races are treated and that any kind of product that has racial connotations and roots such as "blackamoor's head" should be immediately be taken off the shelves until it is changed, because it is completely unacceptable in any supposedly civilized society.

Regarding the topic of Mohrenkopf, it's a traditional Swiss candy that evokes deep, usually positive, emotional ties to childhood memories. It's why the Swiss are having such a hard time changing the name. My own cousins are mortified that the name should be changed because in their minds, it's not racist. And to be honest, it probably isn't consciously racist. However, once the name changes (if it changes), there may be a brief outrage but it will die down soon because the candy itself will remain the same.

My Swiss relatives/friends aren't poor, lazy or criminals. In fact, they are quite lovely people who are usually open-minded. Calling them anything else would be stupid and aggressive on my part.

This movement needs respect from both sides to effect change.

Even kids who eat these sweets today have no idea it's a racist name and it doesn't even cross their minds. (Swiss and foreign kids alike...)
I can sympathise with OP of course, but that's neither here nor there. And before anyone here is accused of "boycotting" yet another Swiss brand/symbol, we better leave this discussion to some other parts or places.
Internet is a wonderful thing, however, problems are neither decided nor solved on the internet. (I should hope)

I'm not sure this is really relevant though, to the greater debate.

I am sure plenty of South Africans have deep, positive memories about the black indentured slaves they had, but we can all probably agree it's a good thing we moved on from that.

Just because it has positive memories for one group of people, doesn't mean it doesn't have horrific connotations and or memories for another group.

Of course it's relevant, because it is a sign of our confused attitudes to racism and helps us to understand the psychology behind it. I have cousins who can't understand why the "Zwarte Piet" (Black Pete) helper of St. Nicklaus is racist, because as far as they are concerned it's not only something they grew up with, but a "positive thing" that he helps santa claus. The Dutch population is almost split down the middle as to whether it is racist or not, with just over half thinking that it is actually racist. Never mind that the Dutch carried on slaving until the 1850's, many modern white Dutch see things only from their own and mostly happy experiences and are resistant to these changes in 'cultural tradition'.

This latest BLM movement is the one that may really accelerate the demise of all of these seemingly innocuous but sinister-rooted things from our societies, because it is long overdue and they are definitely NOT in line with what we like to say are our modern ideals and aims of racial equality.

Ideally in a few years after these things are deleted from society and the initial outrage has passed, we will likely look back, shake our heads and wonder how we ever had them there in the first place.

It seems you have disagreed with me, then gone on to make the exact same point I did.

Maybe you just didn't articulate yourself as well as you thought. I disagreed that it's not relevant to the greater debate and then just followed on from it as to why I think it is.

"Bravo!" (cringe)

When it comes to discriminatory terms, "tradition" is always a weak argument.

Or perhaps you didn’t understand my post. The people thanking it clearly had the critical faculties to work it out.

This is probably why the alt right nuts on here are so prevalent. We appear to be on the same side, but you couldn’t resist a dig.

The same goes for " frauenfurz". We called them " tom thumbs". The German language can be sooooo dumb!

You are really overthinking this and being unnecessarily defensive, it wasn't a 'dig'. Anyway who cares, lets just agree to disagree rather than waste time with petty bickering.

Maybe "pattern" would be a more accurate term. Btw, not an argument. People often seem to insert disagreements where there are simply observations.

I believe kngavl used the term "argument" in its "traditional" (so to speak) sense; nothing to do with a disagreement.

See definitions a and b, here.

Yes, that was a somewhat bizarre interlude on what was a very well made point.
