I find this to be an interesting thread and topic. How much historical stuff should we leave alone simply because it's historical and how much should change with the times? Seems there's no simple answer to every situation.
I don't think that's the root cause. It's about certain groups trying to force their thinking and use of language onto others.

Colonization comes to mind with that too.

A dark part of Swiss history indeed, the age where those poor innocent Mohrs were deported to Swaziland where they had to enslave black people, force them to wear Swiss-woven garments and grow those Mohrenköpfe so that Huldrych Zwingli and Alfred Escher could keep feasting.

Indeed it is, for the greater good.

We’ve had plenty of time to stop thinking racist thoughts and stop using racist language.

If you’re not on board with that yet, you need education.

I wonder if there's a noticeable difference (in taste) between their products and the Migros brand. I know there's a Migros substitute, called differently. Too sweet imo, both of them. But then again, I didn't grow up with the "original".

Apparently, in Switzerland it was called Mohrenkopf from the beginning and was derived as a politically correct version from the German direct translation of the original French name.
It is called "indiánek" back home, brought probably cca 1890s from Vienna ("Indianer"). It is the same dessert, just made fresh in every single cake/pastries/bakery place and kept in coolers with other cakes. They are so popular that people make indiánky at home. The name comes from the dark chocolate that covers it - "chocolate" comes from Xocolatl, a chocolate bean based drink of Mayas and others. People back home eat indiánky and cheer to Indianers. It is a totally positive thing, not negative. It is considered a festive treat.

People like to eat berliners and vienerlis and hamburgers and indiánky - I am trying to figure out what should be wrong with it. Just don't ask what we call roaches back home.

That tells us quite a lot about the Swiss. (Or perhaps we knew it anyway).

Ah yes, I've heard that before. Stalin and Mao based their mass murders on the same grounds.

If you can't accept freedom of opinion and expression you have no business being here. Take your fascistoid views elsewhere.

I wouldn't go that far. "The Swiss" is too large a group. I think that article is a bit sensationalist if you ask me. I think it's funnier how some people on this forum gloat over these type of things, as if they take great pleasure in other people's discomfort. (OP in this case)
Even if I decided to develop a sudden and rather suspicious addiction to these sweets, I wouldn't parade it here. Anyways, if anyone from the "locals" had any resentments about Laderach losing customers because of our little internet bubble....they should think again. Customers can choose. These discussions here are rather insignificant.

I seem to remember that Dudler supplied two Migros shops only.

I was basing that also on the comment voting on in any online articles about this story. It seemed about 75% were against a re-naming and 25 for it.

Of course I do appreciate that a certain type of person comments in online papers so may not be totally representative of the Swiss population but on the other hand, all the 'born-and-bred' Swiss who have commented on this thread seem to think it's a big fuss about nothing and we should leave the name alone.

That fits with what I wrote.

Läderach sales went up to after the more extreme views of the owner and his family were published too.

Mohrenkopf is much more entrenched in childhood memories than Läderach. Eating a Mohrenkopf is like biting into a sweet experience when you were a child. That's how the Swiss feel about the name and that's why sales have increased. No one is going to take away their memories.

Fact: Many Swiss have/had no idea that "Mohren" refers to black people from North Africa.

My grandmother missed the Raj. Such wonderful memories. Such wonderful servants.

No one is going to take away her memories - because that's what they were - memories - and that's where they should stay. We've moved on.

If you change the name, you don't remove the childhood memories.
I don't lose sleep over the fact that a childhood 'Marathon' chocolate bar in the U.K. changed it's name to 'Snickers'. It's still the same chocolate bar.
The memories are in the taste, not the name. Kids don't care about the name - unless it has other connotations of course...

Tom,

Perhaps you've moved on but many Swiss haven't and they don't understand the debate about this. I've had this discussion with many locals and most look at it as a storm in a teacup.

Tom, many just read the headlines and ignore the content. This behaviour is not exclusively Swiss.

Not sure why you groaned my St2lemans - Mohrenkopf has got sweet f**k all to do with your childhood - that's more Twinkie cakes and Hersheys.
