Good news about cold callers/spam

If you go to whitepages.ch and type in the number of someone who's cold-called you, perhaps trying to sell financial products or health insurance, if the number already has complaints against it, there's a form to fill in which passes the information on to SECO.

Neat.

What is important to know about SECO (https://www.seco.admin.ch/seco/en/home.html) is that they can take actions only if they have several complaints, or enough evidence that there is an issue not only impacting one individual but at least several.

So yes, what you said appears to be great!!!

Cool, just filled out a form for a call I got earlier.

And another!

Re: Good news about cold callers/spam

Most of my spam comes from legitimate numbers - spoofed of course.

I suspect a very large network owner makes a lot of money selling bandwidth to spammers. Until they are forced to stop we won’t see any improvement.

Yesterday I got called from a number just a few digits off of mine, and in my address book (a neighbour who arrived around the same time we did). Spammers.

It says you can only file a complaint if your telephone number is listed with a *

How does that work with Natel numbers?

How can I make sure my number is listed with a * ?

I have denied all those questions on what Swisscom wants to send me on advertising and denied sharing my Natel number

1) Go to www.local.ch

2) Find your listing

3) Add an asterisk to your listing

4) Done

Interesting, it doesn´t find my Natel number.

Fun though to see there are 6 other people with my last name in Switzerland

Re: Good news about cold callers/spam

Me personally - don't have a landline phone since years. Having two different nos. (daughter and me) registered under different surnames made answering the phone a full-time job.

We don't have this problem if we're careful with giving mobile nos.

Then it's unlisted, which means that you can't add an asterisk to indicate that you don't want telemarketing calls!

I was getting marketing calls despite having the asterisk - and having only recently moved and with a new number.

I asked them to unlist me totally instead and now don't get any telemarketing calls.

It would appear that the asterisk is like a red flag to a bull.

I get these when I use my UK SIM. In the last two weeks, I've had several calls from Chad, Somalia and the Seychelles. When I spoke to my UK provider about this, they hadn't got a clue what I was talking about, and couldn't care less.

Our landline phone sits in the basement and we hardly ever use it. When I check out the missed calls, 90% are from "call centres", so I spend a few minutes reporting them from time to time.

Re: Good news about cold callers/spam

I'm kind of surprised people still have these problems. I don't answer numbers I don't know on my housephone, callers are welcome to leave a message if they want my attention.
I check the numbers, all marketing callers and other maniacs get blocked on my callblocker. Once they are in there the phone doesn't even ring anymore when they try. (Oh and I checked: The phone appears to be picked up, they end up in nirvana and I guess it costs them money. ROFL)

The only problem still are the "suppressed numbers" as when I blocked them completely, some friends from abroad complained they couldn't get through although they did not suppress their number (cablecom warns about this problem).

This Monday some maniac seriously did not want to reach me and called about 10 times (number suppressed), not leaving a message. It was a power struggle - I won, the calls stopped finally But this was exceptional.

Sign...we've been through all this before....

You don't have kids so you don't get the kind of calls that we do for numbers that we don't know.

School phones up: "Child A has just vomited everywhere - can you pick him up."
School phones up: "Child B has hurt himself in gym class and cannot walk so can you pick him up."

"Hi, my phone is flat so I'm borrowing a friend's phone - can you pick us up as we missed the bus".

And then there's the music school, or various parents...

If you own your own home, you also get to deal directly with repair and other tradespeople rather than go through a landlord.

Shall I go on...?

We've been getting calls which either start 0800... or more weirdly calls from 0001358, which don't look like any phone number I've seen before, unless it is only a partial number. Those I can bin straight away without any fear that family is trying to get through to me.

I normally take calls from Swiss numbers. If it's a cold caller I just put the phone down. No point in wasting theirs or my time.

On a slightly different note - wasn't there some hoohah a few years ago that random people could be called up to answer questions for "official" type questionnaires from government-based marketing offices and it was obligatory to take the call? I have a dim and distant memory of a flurry of indignant objections on here.

I hardly think it would have been obligatory - what if you had a child in the bath or you were in the middle of cooking something?
