Cupid has become a little unpopular
When can you request a vacation leave?

I have been working for 6 months in my new workplace, and I am not sure about the rules or etiquettes about when the appropriate time or after how long I may ask for a break.

So why don't you ask your employer? Or read your contract of employment?

There may be special conditions during trial periods, but in general you should be able to take accrued holiday at any time, so after six months you'd expect to have half of your yearly allocation already and be able to take at least that, but whether you can take more, or in advance, as it were, is a question only your employer could answer.

Re: When can you request a vacation leave?

Whenever it suits you, unless your contract says otherwise!

Surely the company has a holiday request process, or something?

It's really down to a simple discussion with your manager - unless there's a good reason (critical deadlines, need for minimum number of people) you should be able to take holiday if you ask and give enough notice.

My guideline for my staff on how far in advance (minimum) to ask is (days vacation) * 4 - i.e. if you want a week (5 days) off then give me four weeks notice, but that's just my view.

Re: When can you request a vacation leave?

Have a word with your boss. Most would like to know far enough in advance that they can plan.

He may say "Sure Cupid, as long as you're back in time for Valentines day."

Re: When can you request a vacation leave?

Probation/trial period is max 3 months. After that normal company procedure should apply. By law you are entitled to/must take two consecutive weeks (or more) once every year.

Art. 329c Code of Obligations.
