Why do music FM radio stations only play "pop" music?

At lease down here in the Geneva, that's all we get. There must be a lot of jazz lovers down here, but no jazz on the radio.

Radio Swiss Jazz on DAB is the closest we get, but they (understandably) promote Swiss artists and to be honest, I'd rather listen to international ones.

I'll be nice. What is "pop" short for?

Why "MUST" there be a lot of jazz lovers down there?

Re: Why do music FM radio stations only play "pop" music?

It's due to the Swiss radio franchise system.

In order to cover the cost, the stations take no risks, but go for 'lowest common denominator radio' - aiming for the biggest listenership to maximise advertising revenue.

I challenge anyone in the Zurich area to tell the difference between Radio24, Radio Z, Radio 1, Radio Zurisee etc etc simply by listening to them.

"57 Channels and nothing on"...

Internet radio. There is always a station for whatever genre you love or what mood you're in.

The Swiss tend listen to easy listening pop (DRS3 or those above), schlager, Swiss folk and classical so you find these on the radio (the last 2 pushed by the government who clearly believe that is what we all should be listening to). Jazz is a minority taste and apparently international jazz even more so therefore you struggle.

If you don't have enough of an audience you won't be able to pay the bills.

However there must be any number of stations on t'internet.

Re: Why do music FM radio stations only play "pop" music?

The problem is exasperated by is currently being midway between FM and DAB+ reception development. I don't have the figures, but I would say that at least 50% still listen on FM, where the choice is limited.

DAB+ has many more stations and minority stations too, but receivers are not as cheap as FM ones and reception can be flakey. Tunnels are currently dead spots, as are many hilly and mountainous areas.

DAB+ has good coverage in the town of Zurich, but once over the hills either side, you lose half the stations (ie the ensemble for the town)...

Re: Why do music FM radio stations only play "pop" music?

I would actually claim the opposite: Thanks to the Bilag financing racket does everything with "SRF" in the name not need to make money. As a result do the have theme nights for
- "Reggae Special" This was apparently introduced in the early 80s and nobody ever told them since that the music isn't that popular.
- "Rock Special" They don't play the latest pop rock stuff, but anything from Sepultura to some ancient live recording of some 60s progressive rock...
- "World music special" Just in case you really wanted to know whats popular in central Africa.
All of this is SRF 3, the channel which is allegedly for young people.

Jazz is with all respect not that popular with young people, so it's something you'd find on the more grown up culture channel SRF 2. And guess what: I'll save you the search, here is a link to their upcoming "Jazz collection" programs:

there is very little radio music to make love to.

it's all autotune rubbish these days, and dull as the desert COLDPLAY!

Re: Why do music FM radio stations only play "pop" music?

I think you will find that small nations with no important or known contemporary pop music artists to support , will play whatever the youth and others listen to, and in general that has always been music from the UK and the US. In youth culture, you dress in a style that emulates your music taste and its artists, and going by what you see walking down the streets in Lausanne, Swiss youth were all actually born in American or French ghettos...not. So, in order to remain a popular station, they will play the sounds that are popular globally. Having lived in the US, radio stations that play "chart" music will in fact only play that, every other genre of music has its own radio station,

"best" I don't know, it's subjective. As for known, the only ones I am aware of are Gothard (rock - and known outside of CH) and Stress (white rapper)...is that it
