What would you do if single and not visiting family over the holidays

For the 10+ years that I’ve been in Switzerland, I’ve never spent Christmas holidays here due to either visiting family abroad or my partner at the time who was also living abroad. This year, I’m single and also do not wish to be part of the traveling crowd and decided to stay here but have no idea how to spend it since most of my friends here will be with their families.

If you were me, how could you make the holidays memorable and not so lonely? Note, I’m not easily bored with my own company and have wide range of interest in hiking, spa, books, theatres, cooking, entertaining and being entertained. What I love most is unique experiences, like trying things for first time, exploring remote or weird areas.

All ideas, comments and criticism are welcome.
Cheers

Nice restaurant, than a nice movie in the cinema, and then find a cosy bar and get drunk.

I'd spend the day in bed, watch some videos, drink tea. As a non-teetotaller, I might have also got shitfaced on whisky.

How old are you?

Or, lemi be more discrete. How old do you feel..

Why would not your family come and visit you here?

A friend booked a tree house hotel nearby, let me look. Hotel Palafitte, or Les Nids or White Pods.

Sounds like heaven, really.

Then there is Bernaqua, my buddy organized my bday there, we had to run around naked in a circuit of saunas and dip in a bunch of ice cold pools, etc. etc.

Or, organize an EF event, people will show up. It is a good time to meet, people are kind. We are weird enough, it should fit that criteria of yours.

My OH will be alone this Christmas so he arranged his shifts so that he works. Not many people here will have this option though

Am usually alone here except for a couple of evenings max. over the holidays, and have come to love it - usually binge watching, reading, spoiling myself, walking and just relaxing. Given the choice this year and next, wouldn't mind traveling somewhere remote though...

Re: What would you do if single and not visiting family over the holidays

I'm not single, but this year my husband and I face the highly unusual situation of not being able to travel for Christmas. We typically celebrate our own Christmas at our house before traveling, then each of us flies to our families of origin for a separate Christmas celeb, then we meet up again after Christmas and spend the rest of the holidays together, either with one of our families, or in another location just the two of us. I never missed Christmas at my parents, so this year it will be odd.

We plan on going crazy decorating the house, binge-eating chestnuts, binge-watching our favorite Netflix series and Christmas movies, enjoying the semi-empty city and the museums all by ourselves. We'll go to the theater and the movies, drink hot chocolate, walk around.

Unless our son decides to come earlier than planned...in which case scrap the above, we'll be binge-watching "how do I deal with this little person"? YouTube videos, visiting the hospital, and zombie-ing around the house, sleep deprived but ecstatic.

What kind of budget are you willing to spend? Low, modest, splurge? Although, admittedly, porsch1909's idea, which made me smile, wouldn't cost a lot!

The SBB (Swiss national railways) are planning a Christmas trip especially for people who won't be with family and friends.

Here, you can enter the draw for 1 of 80 tickets. Closing date 6th December 2017.
They'll let people know by the 14th, and the train trip will be on the 24th December 2017.

You know you’re in good company when you ask a question and go to sleep and wake up with loads of response from people who have taken their time to reply. Thanks guys!

Now for the ideas: binge sleeping, drinking, eating and watching movies is a default and yes I know I’m lucky to have that luxury having been traveling for work most of the year, being lazy for a day or do and doing nothing is sweet! I love the Italian expression “dolce verniente” and I intend to apply it! That takes care of a day or two but need to move afterwards.

@musichchick, let’s say I stopped believing in Santa more than 35+ years ago but I still believe in magic
I love the look of hotel palafitte but they’re closed over the Christmas period and also wouldn’t want to be alone in that setting! I’d be risking doing things that I would regret the next day do I dare to an EF event? Interesting idea. Will give it a consideration.

On the family side, we are scattered around the world each wth different schedules and getting everyone here seems best in summer which we usually do.

@reids I love the trekking idea but with all travels during the year I am looking forward for some down time away from airports. Trains and boats though are more than welcome!

@zurirollt that’s pretty much what I want to do but haven’t figured out the “spoiling myself” part. I’d like to do that and some of the ideas here help to figure that out. What do you do to spoil yourself?

Thanks again guys - keep them coming!

Naaah - worked way too much this year to do that over Christmas but thanks of the option, it makes sense for some people to do that over Christmas and get a holiday afterwards

Re: What would you do if single and not visiting family over the holidays

As you know, cities in Switzerland over Christmas are pretty much dead to the world. If you are willing to splurge as you say, and want to be in a place that can offer ambiance, bars, restaurants, all of winter's activities, throngs of festive people of all ages and all nationalities, and surrounding nature for quiet moments of self-contemplation, then have a look at one of the many ski stations. I only know the French speaking ones, but Verbier for example has all of the above, and who knows, you may meet the new romance in your life.

I think that you have answered your own question. You work a lot, travel a lot. Why feel that you have to do something amazing just because the day is labelled Christmas? Just chilling, taking time to smell the coffee, seems to be what you want and need, and its something different for you too.

Re: What would you do if single and not visiting family over the holidays

One other thought will be to stay at home and do nothing. We are used to travelling and working so much these days, that we dont have time to be by ourselves and really relax.

It may sound ridiculous, but you think its a waste of days until you actually find yourself at home with nothing to do, and then you realise how much you really needed this you-time.

A very wise person told me this, and i didnt believe it at first, but its the best thing i did. Just make sure you have enough food in the house. You dont want to go out when its cold!

If you had two extra hours in your day today to do whatever you liked, what would you do? Every time your day seems a bit manic or drudgy, make a note on your phone of what you'd prefer to be doing. By the time Christmas Day arrives you'll have a list of gifts for yourself. Try to avoid spending money.

Personally, I'd give as many people as possible a two minute call to wish them well. Time flies and most people would welcome a call from someone they care about, just for the sake of hearing / saying "I miss you, I'm doing fine, Merry Christmas". Beats sending cards.

We never know the minute when we may no longer be able to do so. Then revel in not having to get dressed and tuck into the box sets and Irish coffee.
