What to do on weekends with a 2 years old?

Dear EF folks,

It has been a while...

But now I am getting sooo annoyed with life in Switzerland that I must vent....
So my lovely 2 years old son needs his nap usually between 12 and 2pm, but it can go till 2:30 or even 3pm on a weekend.

And then we would have the chance to go out and do something. But how? All the child friendly places (cafes, museums, zoo, whatsoever) close at 4pm or latest 6pm.
Fellow parents know how long it takes to get ready and leave with a child. So we would arrive to be able to spend there ca. 30 minutes before they close.

What do you guys do as a family on a weekend? I would really appreciate some encouragement and hints.

We live in Olten, so we can go anywhere in the German speaking area.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot & cheers,
Vixy

Re: What to do on weekends with a 2 years old?

1) Go out in the morning and use the afternoon for chillin', readin', housework, homework.

2) Put him in a buggy just before naptime. Go for a very long walk.

3) A combination of 1) and 2).

4) Parks and playgrounds either have no closing time, or are open until dusk.

5) A walk in the early dark of winter's afternoon is tons of fun for a two-year old.

6) McDonalds and other fast food joints are specially geared up for families. We go to a local kebab house when we want a fancy meal out.

I always just bunged mine in the sidecar, and went for a ride.

Took ten minutes to get her ready, tops.

She just turned 27 and has her own large motorcycle these days, so she clearly survived it all.

Granted, girls are tougher than boys at that age.

Re: What to do on weekends with a 2 years old?

In winter & in bad weather we loved Zurich airport for its open spaces as our kids, when very small, loved to run. The airport viewing deck with play area is great and there are also indoor play areas dotted about the airport too. The airport doesn't close, plenty of places to grab a coffee/snack or a meal.

Shopping centres are also good if they are large, have open runways and play areas.

Most evenings, before bedtime, my OH would take our 2/3 year old son for a walk down to the tracks to watch the trains pass. He loved it.. never tired of it, especially as the drivers, when they spotted him, always waved. Routine is your friend when kids are young - find something they love to do and stick with it.

Re: What to do on weekends with a 2 years old?

Hi Vixy, totally get you.
I have 3 and the nap times are always awkward to work around. My first never napped in the buggy..so that was out! I was always working around her, never mingled much and took trips in the mornings. We did the shopping trips or went to the playground after naps for an hour or two. Yes.. even on weekends..It all just kind of blends for us with kids! Weekend? Whats that? Lie in you say? ha!
Anyway.. We also would take an hour in the library after naps. Other times we would squeeze in an art exhibition for an hour in some of the smaller galleries or a ride on her bike to a local farm. They get so tired on journeys at this age that i find that these little trips are the best. As a kid myself on a sunday, my siblings and I were always just taken on a walk! No destination! Just a walk! I also suggest that you don't always need to go somewhere and do something.. just enjoy nature..Theres lots of trails and rivers and wooded areas around Switzerland. Its quite a nice thought.. reality for me at the moment though: I take 3 grumbling kids "walking" some days when we get a bit crowded in the house, and I don't know what i've done wrong, but they definitely groan a lot more than me and my siblings did on a simple nature walk! Makes me sad..
Anyway.. I also met up with friends at weekends for dinner at 3pm and they mostly had kids too so we were in the same boat and weren't partying into the night! Being with friends was my favourite way to pass the time i think.
The 2nd kid eventually did nap in the buggy after much screaming, as I just had to get out with my toddler (i got lots of stares but also understanding nods from other mams!) and the 3rd.. not sure how that first year was.. i totally forget! My third is now nearly 2. We go out in the mornings and get lunch out, then let the nap happen in the buggy and continue the trip, or if its failing miserably, we then just head home and have an evening in doing simple things with the kids like painting or reading and playing and just spend time together. There's no need to stress yourself. Small activities can be just as fulfilling to you and your kid as a big expensive trip to the zoo or museum. These years race by so fast and napping usually ends by 3years old. You will be flying then and able to make bigger trips that your kid will really appreciate. We attempted a museum there a few weeks ago and my oldest was totally excited and talking about everything in one ear.. my 2nd was strolling around somewhere a bit bored and the 3rd.. oh my god.. she yelled my other ear deaf and the museum down.. She was tired as the nap in the car wasn't sufficient and the snack i brought wasn't good enough.. disaster.. But hey! Nothings perfect!
Right now she is napping and my other two are fighting behind me.. so yeah, I better go! Not sure if what i wrote helps or if i even suggested any places there, but you are not alone Have a nice weekend!

Re: What to do on weekends with a 2 years old?

I'd rejoice that my child slept for that time (mine didn't), and do something as a couple

A two year old is kept happy with so many things for the time afterwards - a walk with Mom and Dad, a game or whatever.

Don't see why you blame the lack of wanting to enjoy quiet time with your partner on Switzerland

The World will be your oyster when the little one is just a bit older...

Yes, the phase where they can talk a dog off a meat truck is infinitely more enjoyable.
