How can I report a racist incident/assault and where?

I would like to report possibly a race-motivated assault/behaviour, however you want to classify it and I need help on how to approach this.

It happened today, basically I am following a car driving course in an establishment I dont want to name yet, today was the 2nd day of 4 day-long course. During this course I opened my phone to check translation for a word and suddenly without any word or prior warning the instructor threw his pen from ~3 meters distance towards me and the pen hit my hand, deflected and fell on the table.

Shocked as well as the 11 other students we stared at eachother ... i could not say anything at all. This was the first time I used my phone and the first time time he did it.

I asked him during the pause why he threw it instead of giving me a warning or just telling me to leave the class? he said he didnt care and its my fault.

I warned him then to never do that again even if I used my phone and he said "we'll see"

This is all infront of everyone in the class.

It's completely unbelivable, i dont like to bring racism into this but i have no explanation for they way people disrespect others this way.

I would have forgiven him if It was my second or third time using my phone but it was just litterally my first time and I had no quarels with him prior to this event.

During the pause there were 1 black guy who came to me and said he lived 20 years and didnt see anything like this and 2 girls that sat beside me told me to write negative review for him at the end of the course, and another that said if it had been any of her black friends they would have fought with him on the spot and she found what he did descriminatory.

I really felt humiliated. How can one adult throw something at another adult for looking at thier phone?

This is all from a guy who is hired to teach about rules and responsibility on the road and yet doesn't have the least respect inside the class.

I don't know what my options are and I'm not intersted in money, suing, name shaming but I have 2 courses left and the first thing I will do in the morning is to ask the administeation either to replace the guy or find me another slot to finish these 2 days.

If they accept I'll let it be and will only write the negative report if they refuse then I need help from anyone here how I can make them listen and take action.

Re: How can I report a racist incident/assault and where?

I understand that you are upset, and the teacher did indeed react quite badly. As a teacher myself I certainly wouldn’t be happy to see a student using his phone during my class - there’s no way to know you were checking a word translation- but I would simply ask to keep such activity for the break. Throwing something is over the top.

Where I fail to follow you, however, is when you speak of racism. From what you describe, the teacher’s act doesn’t seem to be motivated by your skin color but by your action at the time, ie using your phone.

In your shoes, I would complain to the head of the school, possibly via registered mail to make it formal.

You forgot the part in your story which would make it racism.

And yes he could have just said something, and yes I can see him getting upset on somebody grabbing a phone in class.

Re: How can I report a racist incident/assault and where?

My thoughts:

1. Good that you confronted him on it
2. You have a classroom full of witnesses
3. You have some students who have also given some thought to reporting the "assault."

If it happens again, report it and use witness statements. These kind of things are not tolerated, especially if there are racist tones involved, and the man will be reprimanded and possibly replaced.

I'm sorry that this happened to you. Driving instructors are under immense pressure and have to deal with harrowing situations on a daily basis. This is no excuse for his behaviour but it may have been a "one-off."

If it happens again, you have the right to report him.

Peace

Re: How can I report a racist incident/assault and where?

Like I said I hate to label things as racist but seeing how with my first instance of using my phone and him throwing the pen towards me, I have no logical reasoning to make except it was done with disrespect and disrespect likely because I'm black. I'm sorry but this is my feeling as I was there and I felt the moment.

Your feelings are in no way supported by the facts.

Have you ever considered that it was because you grabbed a phone in class which in general counts as a big sign of disrespect towards the teacher and that your color has absolutely nothing to do with it.

So stop calling it racism, you have zero proof, and you feeling butthurt does not make something racism.

It still does not give the teacher the right to throw a pen at a pupil.

Re: How can I report a racist incident/assault and where?

I too can't see the racism in your story.

You told us you used the handy to translate a word. Did you tell him?!

The guy has terrible manners, indeed. But did he mention before that he doesn't accept handies in class? (Which does not excuse the bad manners).

I'd say he assumed you read a sms - and you assume his irritated reaction was racism.

Report the incident (without your assumptions) and ask for an other class.

(I would have just thrown the pen back (at his head, ooops) ..... but I'm a bit peculiar )

It does not matter if I grabbed my phone or got on the table and started dancing. The person at the other end has the right 1) to warn me 2) to tell me to get out ... he did none of those thing but THREW A DAMN PEN TOWARDS ME .. i could have been injured. I don't know how anyone can downplay the action of this guy.

Imagine you were sitting on that place and you hold your phone and looking at it someone throws a pen from distance towards you infront of people ... i very much doubt you wouldnt be enraged

Throwing that pen sure was very bad style, but, before that incident, how many non-black participants had been using their phones without being targeted?

the instructor seems to be an idiot but this has nothing to do with racism.

if you pay for the course, you should complain to the organization instead of writing such a post.

You accuse the person of racism in your thread title with no supporting evidence - maybe he had a shitty day , maybe he didn't like your attitude - he was a teacher and you weren't paying attention to his tuition.

It's arguable that you pulling the race card because you can't think of a better explanation is a worse offence than his actual throwing of a pen.

No question that he shouldn't have thrown a pen at you but wake up the pen hit your hand. Suck it up.

Re: How can I report a racist incident/assault and where?

As a teacher, I deal with students from all corners of the planet. Sometimes accusations of racism can go two ways.

I've had teenage students that have made false accusations of discrimination when being reprimanded in order to deflect from their own behaviour. It's rather hilarious actually, considering I'm a foreigner myself, so when they see my look of further annoyance, they usually quickly switch to another excuse.

However, if I were to throw a pen at anyone, I'd be called into the office that same day and given a stern warning about my own inappropriate behaviour.

Re: How can I report a racist incident/assault and where?

I have seen enough already to discern and understand what is race-motivated and what is not. But since it is not easy to write down and explain the subtle, intuitions and inneudos and make everone understand I won't try it.

But even if we exculde race context from this event the fact that the so-called safety instructor used blatant agression without remorse afterwards should be something to be taken seriously.

Hopefully if the administration takes action the I will be at peace if not I will take legal action. I am a grown up man and a father and I really felt worthless to be humiliated infront of strangers for no good reason.

Why? Care to elaborate?

I work full time, I pay my taxes I break no laws .. is it hard to expect to be treated equal to you? Or are you saying I can go out tomorrow and start throwing stuff at people with no ramifications?

Krypton, I understand your point but I would skip the racist part and just report him to the management. Whatever the reason behind his behavior, it is unacceptable to throw a pen at a student, not to mention a paying customer. He might be annoyed at what you did, but he should learn to control his anger.

You cannot prove it was racially motivated and you have enough to report him anyway.
