Re: Amazon Prime [delivery] coming to Switzerland

Bizzarrely, after ages of me not able to get a huge and heavy microwave delivered by Amazon (I had checked multiple times and they never delivered to Switzerland), they all of a sudden unlocked the option to ship to Switzerland... for free! I am talking a huge and heavy-ass Bauknecht microwave oven that weighs around 30KG. For free. https://www.amazon.de/Bauknecht-MW-1...ct_top?ie=UTF8

Literally no rhyme or reason to it... not that I'm complaining.

So no doubt your ordered it and we will hear all about you trying to return it because you noticed it lacked a feature you absolutely need.

Re: Amazon Prime [delivery] coming to Switzerland

Hi all,

Is there an option that I can declare an Amazon order to a German address across the border and pick it up? I live in Basel.

I remember some people did it but I cannot find somewhere how it can be done.

Thanks,

Hi

Las Burg in Weil am Rhein. Set up an account and they will give you a mailing address. Use this address for Amazon and do your order. You will get an email from Las Burg when your package has arrived.

Sometimes it feels like half of Basel use Las Burg but they are very efficient.

Have fun
Martin

Not only third parties, but Amazon itself provides this. See https://www.amazon.de/b?ie=UTF8&node=11498162031 and let it find the location closest to you.

It depends on which amazon site you go to as they all seem to have different policies with regards to fre shipping.
I have certainly had to pay for shipping for stuff bought directly from amazon on both the UK and .fr site.
It seems to depend also on what you purchase and how much you spend. Small orders seem to attract a postage fee. Orders of several items trigger free postage.

If Amazon.fr doesn't ship to Switzerland, I have them deliver it to the post office in Divonne.
However you're paying French VAT like that. Have you (or has anyone) tried to claim the French VAT back on these orders, following confirmed export (invoice stamped at customs) into Switzerland via non-commercial passenger traffic?

No I haven’t tried. Wasn’t worth the hassle.

I assume the 175€ minimum for getting the tax back in France also applies to internet orders?
We’ve never bothered either.

Presumably only if you exit the EU via France. People who are close enough can exit via Germany and get it stamped, however whether Amazon (France) issue a refund is what I don't know.

It’s not the country which you exit via that counts but the country where the purchase are made and the tax paid. France has a minimum spend of 175€ before VAT can be reclaimed so entering Switzerland via Germany would make no difference at all.

That's a shame, I guess I'll be sticking mainly to the German site instead, unless of course its a low value purchase and/or private market place seller sending from France to Switzerland in which case there's no tax.
Whilst Germany still has no minimum spend.

Refloating this thread… seems that unless you live close the border and you can ship stuff to the Germany, France or Italy, it isn't worth to get amazon prime, correct?

I guess I'm not entirely sure, but I do have amazon prime and am pretty sure I've noticed before that amazon.de seems to sometimes offer faster shipping with Prime even when shipping to CH.

And for things that can't be shipped to CH (and can be shipped only within Germany), we use a service by the name of grenzpaket.ch that allows you to use their German address. They have multiple locations and only charge about 5 Euros for each package to be picked up. They also accept large(ish) packages.

Re: Amazon Prime [delivery] coming to Switzerland

Can someone illustrate me on why some people seem so obsessed with Amazon? I'm glad they are not in Switzerland. Glad that they can't shift their profits to Ireland. Glad that people don't get scammed with fake reviews. Glad that people don't get scammed with fake Chinese products...

Because they offer a wide selection at low prices and everything works smoothly. Yes they aren't perfect but the world would be a worse place without them.

What a load of groanworthy BS... reviews are generally accurate and there are very few instances of fake Chinese products if you buy from either Amazon or legitimate thirds-party sellers. They may not be ethically perfect with work conditions and taxes (ike 99% of large companies in existence), but they are one of the best and most convenient online stores in existence and have been a big time and money saver for me in Switzerland, giving me products I could not otherwise find and at very good prices.

Re: Amazon Prime [delivery] coming to Switzerland

Is it fuelling laziness and zero hours contracts .. or really convenient and helping people work for themselves..?

how it works in the UK at least .. You can order through the day and have same day delivery until 9pm.. Your stuff is mostly delivered by somebody in their own car, often an Uber. These cars meet up at hubs, usually pub car parks or services where the van load of orders is shared out to waiting cars ..

It seems to work. But also feels like it’s killing small biz etc
