I'm sure they can afford it.

But why pay when the canton will provide it for free.

The problem, or so it seems to me, is one of accountability.
I'm Ok if Davos or Graubünden are charged at a big discount for, for example, the army services. This is common, and the WEF is massive promotion not only for the town but the country as a whole.

Besides, there's no clear way to calculate cost and return, and any such calculation would be based on a gazillion assumptions anyway, so trying to be precise would be quite ridiculous.

As for the entry cost, it seems you need to be club member (costs 50k annually) to buy a ticket (prices start at 15-20k or so) for the public events. But even then you're still part of the crowd. Forums and discussion rounds cost extra, and significantly more than a measly 15-20k. For instance becoming a "industrial partner" costs an additional 130k. And if you want to bring a companion along the cost doubles (prices as of 2011/12).

Re: Donald Trump to attend the WEF in Davos this month!

Is the WEF really that much and that great of an advertisement? It's in the middle of the high season for skiing and I for one am a paying customer they nearly lost because of it... and Switzerland as a country only manages to strengthen the stereotype as a place where rich people meet to have luxurious meetings... with some dodgy business on the side.

My favourite WEF summit was the one on climate change - where hollywood stars and CEOs who jammed up ZH airport with their private jets debated carbon emissions...

I think this thread should merge with the one on whether we should be kind to Lobster! I think not in the case of the Davos Lobster.

Of courses it is, Davos is in the frontpage news worldwide for a couple weeks. The best Davos can show otherwise is prince Charles visiting for skiing, not much of an attraction point. The POTUS' visit, to boot, is like getting crowned king, it doesn't get any better.

Davos has always been in St. Moritz' shadow, it is the ugly duckling of the two. The WEF is where, at long last, St.Moritz dimply can't compete. And the prime audience of the WEF is exactly the kind of people Davos wants to attract more of: The top 1%. No offense but in this regard you're probably part of the wrong tourist group., you're not "top" enough.

I go to Davos at least once a season and the city is in no way geared towards the same clientele as St Moritz and frankly never will be. Its never going to be jet-set, but always upper middle class. Its lacking in so many ways to do that. Not having an airport to land your jet for example... Davos tourismus is trying to attract families as they apparently want to have less of the noisy party crowd.

Re: Donald Trump to attend the WEF in Davos this month!

We went to Davos last summer for a week just to escape the heat of Zürich.

We got an activity card from the tourist office that gets you discounts on the various cablecars and funiculars in the area. Plus you could book on to various family friendly stuff like a GPS treasure hunt, museum tours.

We stayed in the Alte Post hotel if I remember - decent B+B. In summer it's really quiet - a lot of restaurants are closed - but there was enough for us to have some variety. There was one little place on the high street that did the Gutbürgerlich stuff but REALLY well.

We mostly took cablecars up and walked down the mountains, stopping for the occasional snifter and lump of cheese and sausage at the one or two farmhouses.

Of course.

You just need to compare the shops along the high street. Sankt Moritz is choc a bloc with the sort of shops you might expect on zurichs Bahnhofstrasse, expensive watches, designer handbags and what not. In Davos you can just buy the usual tourist crap.Swiss army knives, chocolates and overpriced German cuckoo clocks. It's a totally different league. Not that Davos doesn't have its own charm and uniqueness, but it's only in their own imagination that they are playing in the same league as Sankt Moritz. I don't think Sankt Moritz would even consider Davos a rival.

Davos has a history of hosting patients with lung problems. When I was little I spent about 3 months "next door" in Wiesen.
Only two clinics left though, for tuberculosis and asthma patients. German.

I like this.

Organise the biglyest mother of all demos to give Trump something to think about.

But also make sure he's not actually there.

I wonder if anybody can spot the flaw here.

Technically I believe he goes to (or at least stays in) Klosters which, socially speaking, is a step or two up from Davos.

St Moritz is Russian dominated so Trump would feel at home there.

Certainly, Davos is neither "mondän" nor luxurious. But if you talk to the locals you can't help but notice the rivalry (or perhaps envy as the thing may well be rather one-sided).

I remember when Bill Clinton came they actually unloaded his helicopter from a thing like that.

And then he talked about climate change.
