Kind to lobsters

The Swiss government has ordered an end to the common culinary practice of throwing lobsters into boiling water while they are still alive, ruling that they must be knocked out before they are killed.

Lobsters “will now have to be stunned before they are put to death,” the government order read.

Good luck with attempting to stun lobsters, maybe someone will bring out a lobster stunner

Re: Kind to lobsters

What sort of barbarian throws live lobsters into boiling water?

I always steam them, they seem to enjoy the steam bath!

Fixed that for you. Makes no sense otherwise.

Is freezing permitted?

Re: Kind to lobsters

Just as an aside (with the exception of st1lemans ), what's the rate of live lobster cooking/consumption in Switzerland?

Maybe some restaurants serve them live from the tank but I can't see it being a common tea-time favourite among Herr und Frau Müller and family.

I've never seen them live in a shop here, even Manor or Globus don't have them.. Over the border however, Carrefour Divonne has a big tank of live stuff, the kids stand looking at them while we shop.

Re: Kind to lobsters

I'm not Swiss so I don't quite understand why there wasn't a referendum to vote on this?

Why do the Swiss government get to vote on the health and well-being of lobsters but the people get to vote on the health and well-being of people (with smoking laws etc).

Is it because lobsters can't vote or take part in an initiative or is it because the Swiss government doesn't have the balls to deal with real health issues concerning their population and future generations?

Does it really matter?

Not just lobsters, any animal or human.. If you're put death by having lethal injection, head chopped off with a chain saw or suffocated with a pair of dirty underpants..

You ain't gonna remember, you'll be dead anyway..

William, tell those cooks now preparing to renounce present lobstering practices and thus bolstering bones of contention among sea-food gourmets to sling their hook.

Because there were not 50'000 voters which objected? See very end of:
https://www.admin.ch/opc/de/official.../2008/2965.pdf
Art. 21 Abs. 2 of this law is the base of this lobster ruling: The federal council can name other animals [apart from mammals] which have to be stunned before slaughtering.

I once saw live crustaceans for sale in Manor, Chavannes Centre. Subsequently, I contacted the Vaud Cantonal Veterinary Department who said they would take the matter up with Manor. I have never seen live crustaceans for sale in the supermarket since.
