Swiss Tradition...but why?

Does anyone know why as part of Faschtnacht it is necessary to have the Morgenwacken (morning wake) parade at 5am!!

I live in Lachen and was very confused (and pretty furious at the time) to be woken up at 5am by about 30 people parading around the apartments with whistles, drums and fireworks!

I know were meant to embrace the Swiss traditions but I would just like to understand the reasoning behind this! The next event on the programme did not start until 9:30am!

I did receive a copy of the programme and I'll be honest I did not look at the timings of things....but mainly as I was not expecting anything to happen so close to my apartment at 5am!

Cheers

I get that :msntongue:....but why 5am! 7am would be a lot more reasonable!

That would be way too late to wake people up.

Ah so it's to make people get up and go to Church! haha another reason to dislike religion  I'd understand it more then if it were a Sunday (not that I'd like that any better...but at least I might've been able to get some more sleep!)

Reminds me of the time I went for an early morning walk and was stopped by the police.

- And might I ask what you're doing out and about at this hour, sir?

- I'm taking a stroll down to the pond to watch the sunrise, officer.

- Bit early for a stroll, isn't it, sir?

- Well, that's when sunrise... er, I mean, well yes, I suppose it is quite early, officer...

:D

Not really a Swiss tradition, just a Fasnacht tradition.

It's not "necessary" to have it, it's just what it is. In Basel at least, it's the Morgestraich, Straich = Streich = prank, and it starts in the morning because back in the days, those pulling the prank (turning off all lights) could "vanish into the night". Or something like that, at least that's what I read at some point.

Also, Fasnacht = fast Nacht = almost night, both in terms of timing and in terms of no lights.

(I hate Fasnacht).

Then you should move to Ticino, as we don't have Fasnacht!

However, we do have Carnevale, which last a month or more, with the grand finale this coming Saturday (until 5 AM or so on Sunday).

I grew up in a non-Fasnacht canton and then moved to Basel 10 years ago. Culture shock. I honestly despise it, and whenever possible, I try to flee this place when Fasnacht is on again.

Morgestraich is next Monday here, ugh. Maybe I'll come to Ticino for a long weekend :D

In the more urban parts of Zürich we celebrate what we call the Loolenspülenchlgggnchl.. Everybody gets up at 5am to flush their loos and so wake up all the philistines who don't participate in this ancient tradition.

Many people do not relaize that it was Commodre Ulrich Zwingli who banned this tradition because he objected to people having fun and he valued a good shut eye, and there was a sort of a bible passage he made up. But follwoing the Zürchers defeat at the battle of Morgengarten when the Schwyzer airforce, mounted on flying dragons, shit bombed the hell out of Wollishofen and it suburbs (the Uetliberg was only half as high before this event, but I don't want to say it's a sh#t mountain). The Zurchers needed to flush their loos to get rid ofa ll the sh#t. Since then the ancient tradition of Loolenspülenchlgggnchl has seen a gradual revival. It is only since 1991 that woman may also participate. Something to do with the Loolenseat being left up.

We're going to the Luzerner Fasnacht parade this afternoon. My kids have been talking about it for weeks. They love it!

We had the village one last week for the children which they took part in.

It's great to see the young people around here put so much effort into these traditions.

Not this kind of Streich, more like the Zapfenstreich. Giving a signal by hitting on a drum or bell.

See DWB on Streich, specially items 6a and 6b.

You should all move to my village. Not a hint of anything to do with Fasnacht or Carnevale. Nice and peaceful we are. :D And I was still up at 525.am as usual.

I never got Fasnacht. Staging around freezing your nuts off and having to listen to that awful racket just never did it for me. Not to mention the amount of time and money people have invest in being members of a Zunft. Forget that, I'd rather spend winter on the slopes.

Some of the floats are pretty imaginative though.

Tom

We have none of that nonsense here in Neuchâtel so I guess that makes us a non Fasnacht canton.

I am very happy not to have any of it here.
