Recycling Shredded Paper?

Curbside pick up? Submit to recycling centre? Something else?

Re: Recycling Shredded Paper?

I guess you're out of luck: they will neither pick it up from the curb nor accept it at the recycling centre.

Re: Recycling Shredded Paper?

"Something else", namely the rubbish sack with your other non-recyclable waste.

We start each rubbish bag with some shreddings. That way they fill up the corners and don't seem to take up much space, as long as we aren't disposing of 5 years' worth of paperwork at once. (And yes it is frustrating not being able to recycle all that paper once shredded!) They usefully absorb moisture from anything damp that needs to go in there, as well.

I put ours out in a paper bag for the cardboard collection without a problem...

Re: Recycling Shredded Paper?

Really, Zürich is different then - we can't get away with that out here. Paper bags used as containers for paper or card are left behind with the relevant box in the checklist of "your waste was not taken because ..." filled in. (Not that I have tried it of course - always follow the rules - but we have some naughty neighbours! )

Re: Recycling Shredded Paper?

Otherwise place the shredded paper in a cardboard box with some cardboard on the top.

I realise that cardboard should be bundled flat, but yogurt covers and other small cardboard have to go in a box, so pop your shredded paper in there too...

Re: Recycling Shredded Paper?

I don't mind putting it in the regular trash bags, just not happy that it won't be recycled. Also wondering how it is for companies here-I'm sure they produce tons of shredded paper- what happens to that? I've tried looking online but couldn't find anything on how to recycle shredded paper here.

In a paper bag, flattened and tied up in a bundle between your newspapers.

Re: Recycling Shredded Paper?

Companies which need to get rid of large volumes of confidential papers can make arrangements with providers of document destruction services, including special containers and collection. Not worth it for a household or small business though.

Re: Recycling Shredded Paper?

Oh now I have looked again and found something. Here's a place in the ZH area where anyone can take small quantities for shredding. Fr.1/kg to do it yourself.

http://roellin.ch/entsorgung/aktenvernichtung/

A couple of years ago we did have a lot of papers to destroy all at once and I would have done this. (Replacing our worn out home shredder was far more costly!) Now we get far less, since bank statements etc are mostly electronic. But topical at the moment is draft tax returns. I do print those for checking, and I don't particularly want to share them with my neighbours or the village at large. Same thing goes for medical paperwork of which we get a steady stream.

Shredding bank statements and other documents containing personal details is just common sense.
Identity theft is no laughing matter.

We just toss it in the paper dumpster/crusher.

Do I understand properly that the price is CHF1/kg if you do it yourself, and a further CHF20 + 1.25/minute after the first 15 minutes to have their guys do it? The DIY method seems like a bargain.

Does any similar service exist in Basel?

Re: Recycling Shredded Paper?

@Village Idiot, looks like it, and I expect their machine would be able to munch through quite a lot in 15 minutes. Then it's all plus VAT but that's not much is it.

In the Basel area, don't know, I'm sure your Googling is as good as mine! Try "Aktenvernichtung Kleinmengen" maybe.

Tom, lucky you - there isn't a paper dumpster available here (Ausserschwyz) that ordinary people have access to. We have to tie our paper into neat child-friendly parcels and leave it on the street on the last Saturday of the month. Officially same for cardboard, but we can get away with filling wine boxes (but compactly, nothing is allowed to fall out). Paper and cardboard mustn't be mixed ... Paper bags aren't taken ...
