+ + + Update + + + A2 locked in both directions-high risk of explosion

On Wednesday around noon there was a serious accident on the A2 motorway after the Schweizerhalle Tunnel near Muttenz. After a passenger vehicle and a semi-trailer collide sideways, the semi-trailer has been knocked over. How many people are injured is still unclear, according to the police Basel-Landschaft.

I can confirm that for miles around the roads are in chaos.

24.000 liters of Methanol in a trailer, the truck itself is/was on fire. The trailer that disconnected from the truck is laying on it's side. Road is expected to be closed till 20:00

So if you need to pass there, better find a restaurant have a nice meal and get on the road later instead of waiting in the car for hours.

wow, how can a semitrailer go head over heels after being hit by a car sideways?

Perhaps the front of the car came under the truck causing it to lift
Perhaps the driver made a to abrupt steering manoeuvre,
Perhaps the car pushed the truck on a corner, or pushed it to go sideways.

etc.. etc..

All it takes is something to cause it to not be proper lined up on the wheels in a straight direction, and the tons of steel wanting to keep direction do the rest. And over 30Tons on the "hook" that might have gone swerving do absolutely not help either.

Traffic was backed up heavily on the side streets here on the west side of Basel, but it looks like it is clearing up now.

Absolute misery on the roads, I exited the A2 at Rheinfelden/Magden and made my way home through the beautiful BL hills and countryside.

The driver of the trailer was airlifted to hospital, not sure about the other driver.

They have already started pumping the methanol into another truck according to Blick.
