Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

Good old fashioned bleach. Bleiche or Javelwasser, applied regularly.

Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

thanks for the tip. the thing is, i have used bleach - in particular the mould remover stuff they sell in pharmacies, but the stains seem too stubborn. so can i ask please, when you say 'applied regularly' do you mean that it's best to keep cleaning it off as and when it appears over the years or do you mean that for stubborn stains you need to keep spraying it and spraying it maybe for even a few days and to just keep rubbing?

Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

Bleach will remove the mould, but if the stains have been there for some time it will not make the material white again. Proper building markets have special coloring/whitener products for this cause.

Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

i see! so basically the mould has in fact gone and the discolouring is just that.

do you know btw how these whitener products are applied? is it sprayed on or brushed on? do you know if it's easy enough to do to landlord-standard or would i need a pro? thanks

Easy and self-explaining.

Go to a building market, explain what you want to do and the rest is just a follow up.

Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

I found that you need to dry the out the seams between the tiles after you shower.

Else mold will grow there after a while.

Use vinegar cleaner every other day to clean the tiles and the tub.

Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

We once cleaned the grouting between bathroom tiles with an electric toothbrush. It's just the right size. This is worth it before applying any of the whitening products.

Are we talking teeth or tiles?

I am doing this at the moment (not using an electric tooth brush, just an old tooth brush) in an old bathroom where a lot of the grout has also fallen out of the tiles. Schimmelentferner is your friend. I am going to scrape out as much old grout and regrout, but as I dont own the property, I sort of doing the old landlady a nice favour instead of complaining.

Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

Some of those products do what you would like, however they are simultaneously dissolving the grout deeper and deeper between the tiles. They may also cloud and dissolve the tub enamel. Vinegar is probably the least aggressive, but over time it will also take it's toll.

Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

very interesting everybody, thanks.

i'm going to try a schimmelentferner and vinegar molotov, and see what happens. then try the whitening. i've even got an electric toothbrush that i never use!

and yes i'll definitely regularly dry and clean the bathroom tiles in my new place. that is exactly the way to go.

You could also try "Schimmel Vernichter" (from Mellerud), which is more powerful than the "entferner". It contains chlorine, so make sure you test it on a small area, before using it for the whole bathroom.

Re: how to clean bathroom tiles

You can also try scrubbing stubborn areas with bicarbonate of soda, then sprinkling some lemon juice or vinegar on top. It will froth a bit, which you can rub around before rinsing off. I rub the bicarbonate of soda directly with a lemon half that's left over from juicing, but you could also use the toothbrush. Lemon is a natural bleach, and the combination breaks down any limescale which causes staining. It actually works better than any cleaning product I've tried!

Not sure if it will work for you, but we used Frosch Essigreiniger on almost all bathroom gunk with great effect. Much better than the other stuff which makes the eyes sting and throats burn.

Re Grouting is an option. Not too difficult and loads of videos on how to do it.
