Hehe, Moldova is cool. They always had better music and better looking chicks than their bigger neighbour. I suspect that's the case with the wines too. I'll probably keep looking this year too just to vote for them. Like 20 votes or something.

Btw, this was the funniest song from them, it literally means "My grandma' is beating the drum"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPDnzJgh9FA
Humph humph cough cough splutter

To be fair, what the Moldovians have is good business and PR sense and they know how to play their cards wisely, even when their hand is empty.

Not unlike many other small countriues.

I use to be in a band that sang in Swiss-German (dragged in by my then-girlfriend who played the bass). The songs were written by two sisters, and I thought they were really talented songwriters (although the band went nowhere).

Here's one of their songs. I'm sure they won't mind me posting it and if they do, my ex-gf knows perfectly well how to rip me a new one... (Only kidding, we're still very good friends.)

Vergässe

Here are the lyrics:

Vergässe

D'Nacht isch hell und kalt
Du druggsch mi nomol a Dis Härz
s'letschte Wort verliert sich bald
und all's wo blibt isch nur de Schmärz

Und Di Gruch an minre Bluse
Erinnrige schlächt und guet
kei Dini Schueh zum Fänschter uuse
im Cheminee erlischt die letschti Gluet

Schneeflocke tanze vorem Huus
frierend leg ich mi ins Bett
und bloos die letschti Kerze us

----------------------------------------------------------------
Chorus (2x)

Und wenn i emol nüm do bi
funkle d'Stärne hell am Firmamänt
Jo wenn i emol nüm do bin
het für mich das all's es änd

----------------------------------------------------------------

Ich wirde Di vergässe
Fründ Lehrer Vatter und Sohn
wird unsri Ziit vergässe
und au unsre Lohn

----------------------------------------------------------------
Chorus (2x)
----------------------------------------------------------------

Wird wägzieh wo nüt me gliich isch
nüt seht nüt schmeckt nüt hört
wo niemer arm und niemer riich isch
und allne nüt und niemerem alles ghört

Wird Füür Räge Luft und Wasser si
Sonne Mond Vogel und Baum
und s'Läbe vorhär
wär nur en Traum

Erwachet grad wie neugebore
wüssti nüm was es mir het träumt
nur Dini Schueh im Dräck verlore
E Schleier Erinnrig in Gedanke versäumt

----------------------------------------------------------------
Chorus (4x)
----------------------------------------------------------------

written by Trix and Regi Dürr
Yeah, cool stuff, clever use of words combined with understatement. Swiss German is a beautiful language for doing this sort of thing.

The problem with most anglo songwriters these days is that they feel the audience is stupid and thus the lyrics overexplain everything and leave nothing to the imagination.

Actually, not.

You have forgotten Cyprus, Armenia and Morocco.

And Eurovision has nothing to do with Europe, rather with the EBU, which includes many countries in Africa and Asia.

Actually, Cyprus is an EU and a eurozone country. And has good looking women.

Those who write for Eurovision definitely so! I wouldn't generalise though. But those you would (probably) like would not make it there, it's like sending excellent basketball players to a table tennis competition. Lots of countries have to catch up with this Eurovision (new) development. Apparently it is all about "diversity" and entertainment now, or at least this is what could make a difference among so many countries.
And who really needs to win this competition anymore? I think, maybe smaller or less important countries to use this opportunity to promote their culture or tourism. Otherwise, it doesn't make much sense to participate anymore, because all this "effort" is financed from taxpayers' money.

Yes, but it is physically in Asia.

My wife's grandmother was from Cyprus, though only her grandmother's father, her grandmother's mother was a Spaniard from Trieste (who left when it was still Austrian, but who is buried in Lugano)

...... and now your wife doesn't know which country to sing for at the next Eurovision Contest?

No worries, Tom can always take her place and win, easy peasy.
