Switzerland fails to make Eurovision Song Contest Final: what a surprise!

Just listened to the duet representing Switzerland, just another "soulless - blended- could be anywhere" performance.

I remember watching it as a kid/teenager and what was fascinating (naff outfits and ghastly presenters aside- bar Terry Wogan, of course!) was actually hearing different languages and music from around the globe...globalisation has just turned it all into a monolingual, mono-cultural musical junk.

Bring the yodlers, Alpine horns, flag throwers, wrestlers and skiers with a modern twist, sing in Swiss-German, French and Italian and stand out as Switzerland...or does it sound too nationalistic from a non-Swiss (yet!) ?

The ESC has outlived its usefulness, and it shows. Shows/concepts like X-Factor and DSDS (Deutschland sucht den Superstar, Germany's looking for the next super star) have taken its place.

I agree. Beatrice Egli would have been a better choice for Switzerland, and she is Swiss, and I'm sure she's have got through to the contest.

It surprised me Celine Dion won it for Switzerland in 1988. She's not Swiss so wonder how that works?

Also amazes me, but is this the best Eurovision can put out?

What? You didn’t know that Quebec became a canton in 1988? Vive la Québec libre! As soon as they got rid of her they reverted to la belle provence. Now she is Las Vegas’ problem.

The song Céline sang was written by a Swiss. I watched the Swiss preliminaries, believe it or not these guys were the best choice, they were all terrible!

That is because you do not have to be from the country that you represent.

- An Australian represented the UK in 1996
- An American won for the UK in 1997
- A British singer represented Luxembourg in 1974, Germany in 1978 and Luxembourg again in 1985
- In 1963 Nana Mouskouri who is Greece represented Luxembourg.

And there are more.

You can represent every competing country you wish.

Indeed, as it is the SONG that needs to be from the particular country, not the performers.

Clue is in the name.

The show might be a bit one-sided though.

The American, Katrina and The Waves, won, and the Australian, Gina G, didn't, but which song do you remember? If any, it's definitely Gina G.

I love the Eurovison final when loads of my American and Aussie mates get involved and have Eurovision parties. Strikes me as a bit bizarre, but for some of them, it's their annual ritual.

Now all we need to do is get to get McTavge in training to dance in heels, and wedge him into a short sparkly little number.

Re: Switzerland fails to make Eurovision Song Contest Final: what a surprise!

The 1990s called, they want their contest back!

Anyway, I miss hearing a song in Flemish, at least you knew who would come last. It should be a rule that every country's contestant should sing in one of it's national languages, just to make sure English becomes a national language everywhere.

The Swiss won the first, in Lugano, back in 1956.

It was for many years.

I actually remember both songs, and I do know the band Katrina and the waves and other songs from them (walking on sunshine for example), as for Gina no clue how she looks or who she is, she was a drug addict who disappeared out of the media and the spotlights after her big hit and a slightly successful follow up to as far as I know never to be seen again as a musician.

The festival was a family tradition in the 70's/80's with lots of visitors watching along and home voting competition, after the expansion with all the eastern countries we all lost interest and I haven't watched any over the last decade.

It's music and entertainment for goodness sake, no reason to get very nationalistic*. :-) Unless you're French. They always sing in French, probably the only ones who never succumbed to the English language.
*isn't the whole idea of Eurovision to bring us all a little closer? You may say I'm a dreamer....lol.

If all Switzerland had ever produced was Yello, that would still give them an entry into the universe's Hall of Musical Fame. (And you can bet that there's some way cool alien music in there.)

Much prefer my neighbors (Gotthard), or even Krokus. And Patrick Moraz was playing with Yes when I saw them in CT back in '75.

Though we can forget DJ Bozo, despite the fact that his is one of the most prolific musicians on the planet.

The Eurovision Song Contest, like rock in general, achieved perfection in 1974.

Nothing since then has been of any consequence at all.
And lest we forget, not one single vote from the UK
