Expired UK passport, flying tomorrow eve. Any ideas?!

Hi All,
I just noticed that my passport expired last week.
Apparently it takes 2 days to get emergency travel docs and costs £100 or so, plus i would lose the flight i booked and have to buy another.

I swapped my UK drivers license to a Swiss license about a month ago.

Question is, can i use my Swiss drivers license and/or my residence permit to fly tomorrow?

According to the Swiss driving authority, the Swiss licence is an EU license and i should be able to travel with it but easy jet doesn't accept the document on their website when i try to check in. Any ideas?

Go to Bern, you get an emergency passport in under 4 hours as I did when mine went in the washing machine.

I called them and they said you have to apply online and it takes 2 days. When did you do that fatmanfilms?

Neither driver's licence or Swiss permit are valid travel documents as far as airlines are concerned. It's passports or nothing so you're going to have to cancel the flight, get a new passport/emergency document and then rebook.

Depends where you're flying to. Within Schengen I have never had to show my passport. But when I lost mine a few years ago and had to drive to the UK, I drove first to Bern and got a 24 hour emergency one within an hour. It was taken from me at Dover and I got a new in London the next day.

Re: Expired UK passport, flying tomorrow eve. Any ideas?!

Just found this on the Easyjet website:
"Identification needed for international flights

All customers on international flights must have a valid passport and, where required, a valid visa. Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland may travel within Europe using a valid EU/EEA/Swiss National Identity Card or Passport Card."

I'm flying with them . Hopefully I'm lucky :/

The border patrol is one issue, Identifying yourself towards the company you fly with is another.

A permit is not "a valid EU/EEA/Swiss National Identity Card or Passport Card."

Re: Expired UK passport, flying tomorrow eve. Any ideas?!

In EU, I've always flown with my national ID card until I got my passport. Never had any issues. (Wizzair, Lufthansa and border control in France, Denmark and some other countries).
However, I've only ever used my passport to get in/out of Switzerland, so I can't help you on that.

Don't you have a UK National Identity card that you could use instead of your Driver's License?

PS: Assuming you're not flying in an emergency, since you've booked with easyJet, you could consider ditching the whole vacation. The cost of the plane ticket is only life half the cost of groceries , *cough* Swiss cost of living *cough*

Doesn't exist - there was an attempt to introduce them that fell flat on its face. Brits only have their passports.

You don't say where you're flying to?

If Schengen, then any valid ID is acceptable.

If UK then an expired passport is valid for 5 years as a means of ID (Also for Schengen)

Finally, if going to the UK, you can ask the airline to send a telex/email to border control to confirm you can enter the country as a British citizen.

Good luck and let us know how it pans out.

Rubbish you can fly with a valid ID card within Shengen with no problem at all.

Credit card sized with photo, most European countries have them, the UK decided not to issue them

How silly can you get ?

The U.K. doesn’t have a national identity card. The population has an ingrained suspicion of them. The labour government of 1997-2010 tried to introduce one, but had to abandon plans.

Probably something to do with the memory of “Ihre Papiere, bitte” and mistrust of any big U.K. public sector IT project.

If you are British you will have none of those.

I would try taking your old passport and just presenting it to who ever requires, they look at so many each day, they probably cannot check all the details so they look at name and photo, matches the ticket and your face, thankyou Sir, off you go.

Bluff your way through, my guess is you'll be ok, take your driving license and Swiss permit to back it all up.

Also the United Kingdom is not a member party of Council of Europe Treaty No. 25, and even if they were they may have limited a UK passports validity strictly within the dates printed on it. Unlike Swiss, Belgium, Austrian, or French passports which are valid for another five years

UK Documents valid for UK citizens for entry to Switzerland according the Swiss State screatary for Migration
https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...rigkeit/g.html

Passport must be valid. Comapre with the above mentioned countries which have the P5 attribute. As you come from outside Schengen expect a thorough check. If they scan it/machine read I expect you will have to answer at least one additional question.

Is there any border control when flying between UK and CH? If the only person checking your passport is the flight attendant, then yes, you can bluff your way past.

But if there's border control, then they use machines to scan your document and I'm 100% sure those would flag the expiration date.
