swiss phone number...is it another tool to be tracked in this police state?

many times so far - whether being on an interview for an apartment or dealing with bank accountant - I was demanded to disclose my phone number. Again, they didn't politely asked for it, neither required it, but they demanded my phone number to the point of being challenged. Often situation ended with the other person making some kind of mean or hostile facial expression, saying "The phone number..." and that was the last thing they've said until silence kicked in. It was almost like arnie would say "The phone number, the phone number now." . Things were serious. Afterwards only awkward silence remained along with the feeling of tense atmosphere and there was no sign in sight that the other person would pull back with a demand any time soon.

Since in Switzerland, one can get a phone number only with an ID card, I wonder if phone number can be used to easily identify one (without the need of the warrant of police) or at least, can be easily used for identification purposes when it's time to call the police?

Re: swiss phone number...is it another tool to be tracked in this police state?

Oh, it's completely fine not to give your phone number if you don't want people to be able to contact you.

It will, however, most likely mean that potential landlords will be unlikely to want to rent to you, and potential employers will be unlikely to want to employ you. After all, for a landlord/caretaker, it is really inconvenient if one can't reach one's tenant by phone if need be, and similarly inconvenient for an employer if there is no way to phone one's employee.

It's your right not to give out your phonenumber if you prefer not to. However, since doing so is considered completely normal and usual in Switzerland, if you choose to refuse to do so, you already set yourself apart as someone who behaves counter-culturally, which can mean less-than-ideal when one could choose from other applicants.

And if you plan to get work:

Get used to send a proper portrait of yourself (vulgo pic), your birth date, an address, your marital status and number of offspring - if you have some - with your CV. And naturally, e-mail address and a working telephone number.

The good thing: Swiss people do not come over unannounced. Even if they have all the aforementioned information, they won't bother.

You're free to leave for whatever country you've come from if you don't want to play according to Swiss rules.

OP is really putting good effort in making us think he is a troll.

What is your 3rd topic going to be?

You call yourself uppercase, but it's all in lower case. Highly suspiclious. Stay where you are. The secret police will be knocking on your door shortly. If you run, it will only make things worse.

I didn't know you had to show your ID to get a phone number 'cause I sure didn't have to show mine when I got it!

That was 17+ years ago, then, as it's certainly been required since 9/11.

LOL I was thinking the exact same thing. However while both posters are clearly nuts, they do have very different styles.

Please stop providing this person with new material as they seem to be doing just fine on their own

And no it is not the same person, this is the person who decided that the authorities did not need to know when they changed address and then found extremely suspicious when they were fined!

Re: swiss phone number...is it another tool to be tracked in this police state?

I am struggling to understand the OPs point. If you,are interviewing for an apartment you need the other guy to have your contact information. Same with a bank accountant (whatever that is), or someone who would hire you. Does the OP really expect the agent to return to the their office (which may no longer exist), fire up the PC, write a letter, print it and take it to the post office? When they can send a text in a minute?

As mobile numbers can be changed easily, it would be inefficient anyway.

No, the way we are tracked is our name and date of birth and, in some cases, our AVS number.
